Fridays tend to be hit and miss with me. I think today will go down as a hit. I picked up this mint CR7 with the original box and remote. Plus, I only had to drive 10 minutes away to buy it. The previous owner had literally made 1 recording on it. Everything functions perfectly. *bananadance*
I'm happy today.

thanks guys. I didn't really work this deal that hard but it took about 3 weeks from first contact to actually get my mitts on the thing and the guy only lived 15 minutes from me. I had actually given up, then he called me today. Dumb luck+some persistence=success.

Nicely understated there, and continuing in that vein that's not a bad deck you've got, allegedly they make quite good recordings........
All joshing aside, throw the best blanks available at this deck and marvel in the years of enjoyment which will come your way.

I think I read that somewhere so I decided to take a chance . . . *wink*

Hi,
Very nice acquisition! Not too often you can find an older deck in as close to new condition as you've shown. What'll be your first taped recording to be played on it? Everyone's got a favourite tape they saved for such a moment.

Hey Nando,
I actually didn't think of that because I wasn't expecting this deal to happen. For the record though, I put in Tool "10,000" days. Maybe that's because subconsciously I was feeling like it was taking that long to actually get the thing.
Followed that up with some NIN "Further Down the Spiral" which just occurred to me is also very fitting for me and this hobby. Probably for some of you guys too!
Cheers.

Actually, the recordings are close to being an exact copy. I love mine, it is the best cassette deck that I have ever owned. It is a workhorse. It is not my "favorite" cassette deck. That honor goes to the "cassette deck from hell" my 681ZX. Which when it works, just floats my boat. But my CR7A has never let me down and it makes superb tapes with rock solid imaging, clean clear midrange and kick butt bass.

Good grief,
That's fairly hard-hitting for a 1st timer! Nothing mellower to sort of break in the Nakamichi? Do you own any other Nak components? I have an RX-505.

It's funny that you should say that. Even with the tingle still in my skin from this aquisition I still feel my fav is my RX505.
It's something that had never been seen before and will never be seen again. It's just so distinct and cool looking and operating. Not to mention that I think it's made some fantastic recordings.
The great thing about decks is that everyone has their favourite, which might not be the best performing or spec'd deck they own. There are some real intangibles with cassette decks that I don't think one would ever feel with CD or even vinyl. My Teac r2r is the only other thing that's close so I think that is saying alot about tape as a medium.
For me I think it's the perceived imperfections and limitations of tape that have been mercilessly drilled into our heads in this digital world that make it just that much more enjoyable every time you hear a great sounding recording. Fallibility and rooting for the underdog is much easier for humans to relate to than "perfection".
Okay, I think I just hurt my brain, I gotta go lie down. *headache*

I know Nando, but it was there so like they say "go hard or go home". I have an RX505 as well, a BX100, CR1, and two Nak 600's.

I was thinking perhaps a little Kitaro would be more appropiate for that deck's lineage.
You've certainly got some classics, especially the 600. That's the only "wedgie" I wouldn't mind having. I have the matching 620 amplifier, BA-100 bridging adaptor, and a pair of NIB WC-600 walnut enclosures.

Nando,
I'm working on one of my 600's right now. I'm keeping one for the forseeable future but once I get the other one up to snuff I'll let you know. If you're interested we'll talk about it.

Hi,
Thanks for the offer. Perhaps there's a deal to be made down the road.
Take care,
Nando.

Thanks NakNut.
I was just reading some posts on another thread (yours included) and realized that the porch light on my RX505 is out. Either nobody's home or I need to get it replaced.

thanks Faustus,
I've had a little time to "play" with it now and so far it's living up to the rep.

Canjet,
Did you know that the sweet thing about your CR-7 is the serial number, is high so therefore has all the updates, direct drive, Eq, etc. It only holds true if the numeration is the same as CR-7A. But what I see is that your deck is a CR-7 so I'm not sure. Anyhow great catch and looks very new congrats to you. I will give you a tip for the CR-7, they tend to sound a bit thin, so when recording adjust your levels to -5 to -10 db and you will get a perfect recording.

Very nice find. I had a clean one (only paid $175CDN for it) and foolishly sold it. It paid for a good chunk of my 1976 Ford Thunderbird last summer.
I see the CSA sticker on the back. I believe that most, if not all CR-7s manufactured for Canada don't have any letter suffix. My deck was an original Canadian machine and wasn't an 'A'.
iamhifi makes a good point about the serial number. Nice to have those updates.

thanks guys.
I'm happy to hear about the s/n. I did some checking before I went to get it regarding the serial numbers/update issues. I thought I would be okay but honestly it wasn't going to be a deal breaker either way.
I'm pretty sure you're right about the "A" designation missing for Canada. I believe "E" was Europe and "A" America etc but someone else I'm sure knows more than I do on that subject.
I appreciate the tip on the DB levels I'll definitely check that out. So far I'm really enjoying it. Not as sexy as my RX505 but I will admit it's pretty tough to distinguish between the source and recording on the CR7.
Cheers.

Hello Canjet,
I will give you an additional tip that works for me, use for interconnect MIT Terminator 2, relative inexpensive, about 30.00 on Epay, and that will make the CR-7 sing like a rare bird. The ultimate twick use a slab of granite an inch thick about the same size of the deck, and buy 4 stick on rubber feet found in hard ware places, and you will have the ultimate sound.
Enjoy it!

I just wanted to say *thumbsup* on your 7 !! And on using NIN for the test! I have "Broken" on LP with the 45 single that came with it. Sir Renzor's sound is painful noise to some, it gives me layers of goosebumps if playback properly and, dare I say it, piss shivers *eyepop**devil*
I see many *grin*'s in your future *check*

Stuwee,
Trent's the man. I'm going to Sasquatch festival mainly to see NIN. If you have blu-ray you have to check out the Beside You in Time show, unbelievable. NIN seems hard to the uniniated but the guy is a genius.
I like alot of other music as well but I always get a kick out of NIN or Tool on cassette or better yet, R2R. It literally brings a smile to my face. Watching a couple of big metal reels turning out With Teeth . . . always a good day.*Hi5*

Thanks Angel.
I have my eyes on some Cambridge interconnects right now but I've heard some great things about MIT. I've never thought a lot about isolation for cassette decks but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.
Someone should start a thread about interconnects and tweaks like isolation. I'd like to see the members weigh in on this sometimes controversial topic.*scratchchin*

Canjet and others,
From the Electrical engineer point of view all cables sound the same as long is good copper, something like that. And they will also say to play the blind test, I don’t that. I am not an engineer, I like electronics and my ears don't lie to me. My System sounds different with different brand of cables. I had connected a Transparent Ultra with my CR-7A and sound it amazing, then I tried the MIT and sounded great also but different not worst. So I sold the Transparent and bought 4 sets of Blue heaven that my Dragon, ZX-9 and Mcintosh Tuner MR 7083 sounds great with. I have tried Nakamichi factory cables, Nirvana, Monster, Mogami, Nirvana SL, Transparent Ultra, and the ones that seems more transparent to the components that is to let the component sound and not the cable are the Transparent and the Nirvana; I bet other high end cable can do the same job. On the other hand the Blue heaven is relative inexpensive $100 and so is the MIT Terminator 2 and does the Job very well. So there you have my 2 cents when comes to cables and I’m opening a can of worm.
