Being that I don't have the budget to shoot for TOTL decks right now, I'm rather attracted to the second-from-TOTL XK-S7000. A nice one is available locally and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with both decks or is informed on the differences between the two, other than the lack of champagne finish and wood side panels on the '7000.
Thanks for your input.

I'd love to tell you since I own the 9000, but I really have no clue what is different. If I had the brochure- I'd figure it out. I suspect the frequency response may not be as good, but other then that not sure.

I'm sorry to say that I can't speak from personal experience only from what I have read. The XK-S9000 as you know is the best deck that Aiwa built and it got a rave review from I believe Stereo Review back in 1993. I don't believe that the XK-S7000 is to far from the performance of the XK-S9000 and if you can get one that is working for a reasonable price you should go for it.
The only caveat is that service and repair can be costly just ask Braxus.

The deck is draka1032's, and he seemed to think that the only noticeable difference was simplified bias/calibration adjustments on the 7000. It has the separate power supplies for analog and digital sticking out the back, the damping wood base and the damped cassette load position.

They both make me wet in a special place *grin*, I wouldn't trade my Teac V-8000S for one, I think they (the Teac included) are about the best you can find in cassetteland, buy it! I'm jealous!

Thanks for the pics of the 9000; I've always wanted to see one up close (and in side) like that...

I took these over a year ago, just had to find them again. Here are some more pics of the inside of the 9000 deck- specifically the right side of the deck. You'll notice the large Dolby S board on top which later Sony decks cut down to mini micro circuit wafer boards with micro components on them. My 909ES Sony used those micro boards.

Technical differences:
7000 - recording head is Super-DX, playback is amorphous.
9000 - both recording and playback heads are amorphous.
9000 has one extra motor (just like Aiwa XK-009 comparing to 007), exclusively for playback take-up reel. In 7000 one motor shares both FF/REW and take-up duties.
9000 has more extensive calibration facilities, including EQ variations.
(Aiwa XK-S7000 is my main recording deck at the moment.)

Hmm, I have posted this KX-S9000 for sale at local auction sit, some time ago, for 400 € and no interest..
I have followed eBay auctions for this decks and so far they always use to sell much higher..
Is this recession or is the deck market going down..? I definitely have a feeling that the tape market is slightly..saturated..?
