Mainly from 1985-1995 - they also represent my taste !jam!

1: The Mission and The Jesus and Mary Chain, two of my many all time favourite bands.

2: The Cure, note the bootleg cassette of the Budapest concert.

3: Mixed, with some Bowie, the Earthling was probably the last one I bought in the 1990's.

4: New Order.

5: Mixed, with some oldies. I remember buying the Motorhead after a long day at the library at Sheffield University.

6: Mixed, with some REM.

7: Mixed, note the 3-cassette-box of 'The Artist formerly known as Prince' (glad he took his name back :) )

8-9: Some Hungarian bands/artists, one or two are still unavailable on CD.

10: Some R2R, I bought them because I was curious how they sound.

Back when I never did get into the pre-recorded tape thing. I always thought I could do a better job from my own deck from vinyl. But lately I have been getting the odd tape. I got a purchase of 120 pre-recorded and sealed classical tapes for a little more then a dollar each. But I've found the sound on some pre-recorded tapes to be smoother then the CD, so I've been collecting more.

I never got into pre-recorded tapes back when they were big, as I'd always buy the LP and then tape it myself. I owned a few, mainly picked up while traveling. Now, however, if I find stuff I always wanted to hear or never got around to buying and see the tape at the thrift for $0.25 or whatever, I'll grab it if it's in good shape. Ones that hold up very very well are any of the Windham Hill tapes by George Winston, Shadowfax, and other artists. My pre-recorded tape collection grows every Saturday during yard sale season ....

JAMC, ah yes the Reid brothers from East Kilbride near my home town of Glasgow, love that feedback drench.

I saw the Cure in some venue down Sauchiehall Street round about the time of "17 Seconds". Lost interest in them after that but "Three Imaginary Boys" is still a great lp.

A few years back I found myself with a weeks - enforced - holiday and decided to visit either Czechoslovakia or Hungary. Hungary was cheaper to fly to, so I thought to myself what do I know of the country, it's culture and people.

I decided to see if I could name 10 famous Hungarians and if I reached that number I'd go. From memory; Laszlo Biro, Istvan Szabo, Bela Lugosi, Zoltan Korda, Balacz Taroczy and Andrea Temesvari, Erno Goldfinger, Michael Curtis, Ferenc Puskas, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Vilmos Zsigmond and Zsa Zsa Gabor not forgetting Bartok/Liszt/Lehar/Dorati - Budapest here I come.

I stayed in Pest with a woman called Tiborne who didn't speak a word of English, ate Hortobagy and Goulash, copiously drank Bulls Blood and Tokai(very nice) and got lost in the woods for a couple of hours near Szentendre looking for some building by Imre Markovic.
Fun at the Gellert Hotel floating in a sitz pool in the rain, saw the pock marked structures from the '56 uprising, hung out with a lassie called Emse from around Lake Balaton and had a great time.

So if you were to recommend a contemporary Magyar musician to a person with fairly catholic tastes who would be your choice ?

I'm not too ashamed to admit I have no idea who she is, the Polgar sisters on the other hand.

Have I told you what great taste you have? Specifically, that we have very similar tastes. :D Especially the Jesus and Mary Chain, New Order, and Cure stuff. The Cure is my all time favorite band, I have a Cure tattoo on my leg even!

Funny, I actually started out with pre-recorded tapes because my childhood was basically the tail-end of the cassette era. Now that I'm back into, it's all about recording my own tapes to get the best sound quality, but I do still have about 50 pre-recorded tapes. Some sound pretty good, many sound downright terrible.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

There's a lot of good stuff in his collection. I never got into The Cure, and really can't say I've heard much of their stuff. But the REM and many of the big-80's stuff is all great!

Nice collection. I've found that I pick up prerecorded cassettes all the time. It's a great way to hear music that you may have missed the first go round and a very cheap way to sample all types of music even those guilty pleasures you would never be caught buying on another format.

Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) ~ Caddyshack... Too Funny!

Istvan, that's a great collection of pre-recorded tapes. Like many here, I never took prerecorded tapes quite seriously. I always have viewed cassettes as a playback mechanism for my albums or CDs and would only buy the record or CD and then record onto a Maxell or TDK Type II. Or, especially when I was in the military, I'd borrow other guys' CDs and record the CD to tape because I always felt my Nak and a good type II made better recordings than the pre-recorded tapes.

That said, I have found some pre-recorded tapes that are recorded very, very well, but I think they are the exception, not the norm. Like Naknut pointed out, I will now buy a pre-rec tape just to listen to some music I went overlooked in my past. Recently, I found a FATBACK tape for $0.25 that is an exceptional recording (HX Pro) that had some awesome mid-80's funk on it! For a type I tape, I can't imagine it sounding any better than it does.

Posts like this will make me now look for even more gems in the pre-rec thrift bins!

Take care,

JT

I listened twice the PSB double set. It is a collection of 30 B-side songs up to 1995. There is an accompanying little book with a long interview in the box with a hologram. Neil and Chris talks about every song, how they were inspired, recorded and mixed. The sound of the tapes are OK (type I, no Dolby), even the highs are fine. If anybody happens to come across one at a reasonable price I recommend to buy it.

Some new classical tapes from a record store (plus a cleaning cassette).
The price was next to nothing.

That's a nice little pick up Close. I think I have more classical on pre-recorded than any other genre. Whole bunch of Naxos stuff and complete collections of the Laserlight label which are actually quite good.

A nice German Wagner box. East-German edition with Karajan on Type II tape.
