this is my custom DENON DCD-1500 CDP; with an upgraded power cable, a set of insulators on the bottom from a 1990 DCD-660, thick felt pads from a SONY SLV-R5UC S-VHS VCR, and the uncommon faux rosewood side panels. my personal baby...

Denon always made good players. My personal favorite would have to be the DCD 1520. Built well and TOTL for 1989.

I had three DCD-1500's at one time or another. Decent sounding but maybe a little dark. Variable outputs are a nice feature for going CD direct but this feature is available only with the orginal remote control. None of mine tracked reliably with CD-R's so off they went.

sorry, but that simply does not josh. the 1500 is one of the most reliable vintage CDPs, especially with CD-R. you must have been writing your discs at very high speed, well over 40x. i used to do mine at 40x, and for the most part, the 1500 liked them just fine. then, i made it practice to record at 8x. havent made a disc at that speed that the 1500 didn't like yet. one must remember that most vintage CDPs will have no issue with CD-Rs recorded at 8x or less!!

Just giving my opinion. In addition to the three DCD-1500's I used to own, I had a DCD-1100 as well. All decent sounding units but not to my taste.
Ability to read CD-R is not a function of speed recording, although that may help to resolve read errors of scratched original source CD's. Older lasers tend not to be as bright so tracking the less reflective CD-R is an issue.

I was in the market for a different transport, since I have been using a $39 panasonic dvd player, which btw I took from Dingus. I used that in my setup with the Zhaolu Dac
But I wanted a dedicated, heavier, more soundly built, and this thing is fairly heavy, I spent $100 on it, plugged it in and it sounds pretty darn good.

Recently saw a 1500 II at a Sally Ann*eyepop*. Something didn't look right. Plugged it in and it did power up but the tray did not open at first. Finally, pulled it open and put in a cd. Had to push it closed. No play. CD would spin but then wouldn't stop. Looks like it took a couple hits. Marked $32.50.. I guess if it turns on it is ok to them. Got home and did a search. Realised it was missing the numbered keypad. No wonder it didn't look right.

If I get it open again maybe I could get enough cds stuck inside to make it worth $32.50.*naughty*

if you could even manage to find that many discs that you liked!! generally, the bulk of used CDs at any given thrift usually revolve around scratched to death, ex-teeny-bopper owned copies of BRITNEY SPEARS and J-LO albums, among other talentless modern talents...*headache* still, that is one overpriced SA!! as i have mentioned before, i was introduced to the magnificent 1500 via a $14.00 example, that i procured for $11.00 thanks to my grammy's senior discount, with moderate to light cosmetic flaws but otherwise perfectly solid and operational. i had my mind squarely focused on PIONEER, but that 1500 sat there calling out to me nevertheless. something about it just seemed special, and the notion that it was something worthwhile just wouldn't leave me alone. so, i took it aside i gave it a complete inspection, and lo, i was TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY!! instant love!! i had never before laid hands upon such a quality CDP, and then instantly decided that PIONEER or no, i simply could not leave that sally-ann without it!! today, i am a happy PIONEER devotee with a serious weak spot for a very specific DENON model!! S'all good!!o-o:-)

I decided to post another thread on the 1520. Its probably the best unit from the 80s.
