A friend that I have not seen since third grade is passing through, and I invited home to come over for a few hours, so if COURSE, I am going to demo my system. So I'm making a demo tape for tomorrow.

Tape: NOS Ampex 631. 7" does NOT Shed. Already ran it through at 15IPS to make sure of that!

Doing side 2 first:

1) Still Crazy After All These Years-Paul Simon
2) Big Noise From Winnetka- Henry Mancini
3) Celestial Soda Pop-Ray Lynch
4) My Way-Frank Sinatra
5) She Cares-Styx (he actually GAVE me a copy of Paradise Theater in second grade, and that's the first album I had besides the ones my father left behind)
6) I've Seen All Good People-Yes
7)Fire and Rain-james Taylor

That should fill up the 1200' tape.

Side 1:
Also Sprach Zarathustra-Strauss/Reiner/Chicago Symphony/ 1/2 Speed Mastered red vinyl

Just thought I'd share. !jam!

Taping side 1 now.

Is it OK if I have a momentary +3 peak into the red on Ampex 631 tape? bEcause Also Sprach Zarathustra just did that....

Right on. Seems like a nice gesture. I take it this person also has a RTR?

As for peaking the needles? Momentary spikes like that are normally not a problem, though you might want to play it back and/or use your monitoring function first just to make sure. #631 wasn't what you'd call a high end tape. So I don't know what the threshold of distortion will be. Of course as you found out, sometimes a 'normal' level on one machine will be a bit much for another to handle. Take that tape I sent you. I recorded it at 0-+3 on my X-2000R. Sounded great on that deck. But because it records so much hotter than yours, it was a bit much for your deck to handle.

I played it back, and no problems....I got lucky. I usually try to peak maximum in the +! area of my meters...

I am doing a system demo, of course, so that's why I made the tape....not to give to him....but for the occasion....and it's useful to have a pre-setup demo around. Yes!
