I gathered some shots of all the main tape decks I have and put a collage together of all of them (minus the JVC portable). This is what my rack would look like if they were all in there. Granted I don't need 5 decks in one system, so this pic will never be a reality. They will be split up into different systems. Anyway take a look. Lets see your decks.

I'm a Star Trek fan, so I can enjoy seeing the Excelsior pic as well as any. I remember watching STIII when it came out in 84. Can't wait for the new movie next year. Still love the Enterprise too though.

i am 26, but i totally grew up around tape. the compact cassette has been a part of my life since my very first coherent childhood memories, (i can remember all the way back to when i was less than five.) and has never left my life. my very first audio component was a mid-90's low-end SONY cassette WALKMAN. after that, i inherited my mother's PANASONIC cassette boombox. made many tapes on that thing, then in 2000, i received my very first component Hi-Fi, inherited from my biological ex-father. of the three components, one was my first cassette deck...

I believe all the GX-series of both reel and cassette machines did. My Akai GX-267D does and I find them to be superb sounding decks.

It was claimed that the Akai X-tal heads were virtually indestructable and would basically last forever.
Has anyone had a chance to prove or disprove this theory?
I once had a trio of Akai decks. One of which was a GX-747 (which I sold for a song after the tension roller belts broke. A move I wish I hadn't done. It was otherwise a cherry pristine deck). I logged quite a few hours on it. But I never was able to discern any sort of wear pattern.
The manual azimuth adjust feature on those decks was quite handy too.

Welll.. as a matter of fact. I did manage to destroy the heads on my Dad's old GX-1820D R+R that were Xtal. (I won't mention to say I used nail polish remover instead of isopropyl... *headache*)

Also have a basically NIB Yamaha KX 380 that I found locally for $20.
So, only two decks, but two more than I had a month ago ! )dance(

Oh MAN.. You will NOT believe this one. I believe I mentioned in another thread or two that the old man put that GX on the side of the road.
Well, just as soon as I "confess", he leaves me a message on the phone today - "Hey Jerry - happy birthday. I found an old reel to reel in the garage with an 8 track slot in the side. Come up and pick up your present or I'll bring it down there whenever I get there next... " *fm*

It needs some work, but maybe I will take it on. Need to tear 'er down to parade rest, shoot all the cobwebs out, oil..lube.. dexoit.. yeah. I'll also replace that volume pot that I remember getting broken off of it oh so many years ago. Demag.. clean.. see what I can do there.. (but no way am I going to bother with the 8 track.. hatem...heh)
That does sound like a cool project eh?

Setup as per this arvo. Just fixed the input volume pot on the Aiwa. I originally thought it was broken in shipping (though it still worked but was very dodgy) and was dreading finding a smashed plastic internal casing. I pulled the deck to bits and found that the internal mounting is metal and all that needed doing was to tighten the fastening. Give all the pots I could get at some switch cleaner and put her all back together.
Decks are
Tandberg TCD 310 MKII
Aiwa XK-S9000
Pioneer CT-F1250

Matt,
Years ago I had an Akai GX365-D I think was the number, and it had the Glass and Crystal Heads which destroyed over time.
