I know this Sticky Tape Shed issue/problem has been talked about in the R2R fourm but I haven't seen a post here in the cassette fourm.

I have some cassette tapes with this same problem. Has anyone tried to bake a cassette tape? I know this would be very very very tricky as the plastic housing & parts would be affected by the heat.

My dad had 8 cassette tapes of unknown make. They were blank tapes used to recorde lectures. Recorded mid 1970's by my dad's uncle who was a professor at a university in IL & recorded one of his lecture series.
(I managed to be able to play them using my Nak 582 to transfer them to new Maxell Comunicator tapes. I had to clean the heads each pass & just managed to make it through the speech with out it squeeling. I had to use the Nak because all the single capstan decks I have would refuse to play them at one point or another).

I have 3 pre-recorded tapes bought one from the early 1980's the last 2 from the late 1980's with this problem as they squeel & leave some tape oxide on the heads (No where near as bad as the above 8 tapes from the '70's). Below is the list of those prerecorded tapes in order of when I bought them. 2 of which are out of print.*fit**crying*

This is of some concern as if this problem continued in to the late 80's where does it stop? Could it continue into the 1990's? Or further? What other tapes in our collections will fall victim to this? How many will be OUT OF PRINT or never available on CD?*headache**crying*

I've had a few pre-recorded CrO2 tapes leave a white powdery deposit on the heads... strange, as the tape itself looks fine to the eye, and plays OK. It's just a nuisance having to swab it off the heads every time. I've eventually binned the tapes that do it - just a bad formulation I suppose.

I too have had 1 or 2 tapes leave a white residue but with no other problems & I don't remember what the tapes were.

Have you tried to clean the tape with a Q-Tip or soft paper towel?

You have a great taste in music! Actually, both of those were re-issued on cd! I have copies of them both.

i also noticed some squealing and some oxide on the heads with some tapes and also some white powder with very old chrome tapes... anyway it seems they are either extremely old or extremely badly stored tapes.

but, really, i don't know if these issues are just related to the famous Sticky Shed Syndrome or if they are some other different deterioration issues... *scratchchin*

anyway, being them all very old blank/recycled tapes then i simply put them apart and i will not use them anymore... luckily i am still FULL of blanks in perfect conditions to record into. *hope*

CHEERS,

Vince.
