I'll start off with here. The First pic is of the decks I have. Missing in that shot is the new XK-009 deck I now have which is in the third pic with the other Aiwa. Second pic is of the main stereo system I have. There are more units I couldn't show since the rack only holds so much.

Accoustic:
Very nice setup there. I like it. The only thing I would've done differently in that setup would be somehow try to get at least one of the RTR's closer to eye level. This not only facilitates better use and function (so as to not have to stoop or lie on your stomach to reach and use the transport and record functions), but is better for the "spinning reels eye candy" that so many of us love.
BTW: Is that deck in the lower left corner a Teac A-3300SX? Sure looks like one. That is the model deck I used growing up that my father had. I would *LOVE* to find one in cherry condition today. He still has his, but it hasn't seen a tape in probably close to ten years. And even then, it needed a lot of work to get back up to spec. Were I to haul it out now, I'd be surprised if the thing would even be functional. Certainly not in anything resembling 'plug-n-play' condition.

Thanks Des... when I drew out the design for the rack I put the R2R's on the bottom because of the weight. But when my buddy who built them made them very sturdy the racks will hold a R2R even on the top. I'll have to put one on the top left hand corner to test out your suggestion. And yes, I do, but like, to mess around with the decks while lounging on the floor.
The deck on the bottom left is a 3300SR... the same as the SX but with auto reverse. The 3300 (and 7" 2300's) series of Teac's has been a favorite of mine for the combo of there sound and I've learned to do most of the basic repairs and maintenance myself on them. You should get your dad's SX up and running for him...shouldn't be too hard.

Nad I feel for you. I don't have my own place as of yet (my own apartment), so my stereo is crammed into a small room too. Even the computer room has my second stereo crammed into the space it could fit into.
You stereo is quite good for a starter system. Back in the day my system wasn't very impressive especially since I was big time on a budget (I worked doing newspapers and later McDonalds). I didn't even have real speakers, but Rad Shack parts stuffed into a fish tank or box of some sort.
When your funds increase (hopefully they will)- your system will get replaced with better units as required. The beauty of buying today is you can get some really nice used units for not much money. Some would argue the older stuff beats the pants off what you can get today. Maybe- but its all fun.

Actually, I'm quite pleased with my components. When I get a bigger place, I want to get bigger speaks, some with at least 10-inch woofers. I actually have some nice homemade bookshelf speakers with 8" woofers that are pretty nice, but they're in my living room system.
Eventually when I have a dedicated hi-fi room, I'll get a tube integrated amplifier. I also have a BSR 3-speed turntable I'll get repaired & get a phono preamp with MM & MC inputs. My cassette decks are fine, I like them & they make good sounding tapes.

Hey vinyldavid,
You're the first I've seen who also incorporates cinderblocks into your setup. :-)<-:-)<-
I use them with 3/4" plywood to make primitive but excellent work tables. They hold any amount of weight. They're solid as rock, & they look mighty, boxy as hell, & old school!
Five stacks of 4 blocks each. One sheet of plywood with a section cut to make it a wide 'U' shape. Total cost: Around $40.00/per table. Tables that will last forever, & take everything analog audio can dish out.
Check out the prices for recording work tables. Thousands! If your doing commercial applications, maybe it's needed. But for home setup? Please! *reelspin**reelspin**reelspin*

Thanks. Mostly luck. Began with an all Craig system then got a Yamaha CR-820 based system from my best friend's brother. Had those for decades then was introduced to the hobby. Most expensive piece pictured was he SX-1250 at $34.99. Didn't know what it was when I saw it but got to understand quality real fast from audio forums so I grabbed it.

Back in the '70's cinderblocks were standard issue.... couldn't find a pic with cinders in it but here's the stand I built to graduate from the '70's to the '80's with. This is from 1985. All this stuff is gone... including the 1400+ LP's ;-((

That SX-1250 is one reciever that I'd like to hear. Many like it better than the 1980. Do you still have the CR-820? I also see you've got a BIC Beam Box... I just won one on fleabay and it's coming early next week. How do you like yours?

I bought a non-working SX-1250 (bad stabiliser board) from a mechanic that was using it in the shop. He did music transfers at home and said he had a couple*drool*. He had just got an SX-1980—just because. Said he preferred the 1250.
Still have the 820 (sentimental) and picked up a CR-1020 (in the BR) described as "Yamaha receiver with speakers." Bad pic and seller couldn't answer questions (family had been storing it for uncle). Turned out to be minty JBL L112's. Woofers did need foam. Part of my main system. The Beam Box is a fun addition and they do work.

I love the Jedi poster along with the other movie poster on the wall of the home theater room. It gave me the idea to get my own posters for my place when I move into a new place. Holy,
I think I went overboard on getting some posters. I am wondering if I'll ever have enough wall space for all of these. And buying frames will be very expensive in total.
Anyway here are the posters I got:
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (bought this new at local Walmart)
Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back (got two- old edition and new Special Edition, but will only use one of them)
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Back to the Future
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (this was the only original movie poster I got)
2001: A Space Odyssey
Citizen Kane
Lawrence of Arabia
The Time Machine (1960 version)
The Passion of the Christ
12 posters to put on the wall- wow! The Special Edition "Empire" poster won't be used. And I found this site for frames in bulk:

Here is a more in depth post of my revamped system with the new rack I got made up and put in the room. Well we barely got the rack up stairs since there was a tight corner to maneuver through. But its in the room and the components are settled in their spots. I found out the majority of cables won't reach now, so not much is hooked up. I got the basic units hooked up which were the play part of two of the four tape decks, plus the one SACD player and turntable. The amp is also hooked up. The speaker placement is now much better then it was before. Anyway I'll post one pic of the whole system, but see my other post to show more closeups. Keep in mind some spots are being used by the currennt components, but I designed this rack to take a power condition (in place of the vcr), a Magnum Dynalab tuner (in place of the SACD player now there), a McIntosh SACD player (in place of the Luxman CD player), and a Mac Tube preamp (in place of the Rotel unit). So take a look. The second pic is all four of my tapedecks in their new home ready for use.

Wow John,
That's all you have left to get on your want list? Though my system is big, many components will be replaced when possible. I still have quite a few units I need to get yet for both systems.
Anyway I'd thought for fun I'd put up some pics of the posters I picked for the main living room where the main system will eventually go when I move. As mentioned I have 12 posters picked out, so here they are below as to what ones they are.

Thanks John. As you can tell I love science fiction. And if I'll have enough wall space in my new place to put all these posters- that will be a miracle. I'd like to get even more, but I had to put a stop to it somewhere. The frames themselves will cost me between $400-500 for all 12 frames. If I went to a frame shop it would be 3x times that.

Hey Rat!! That's a JVC JR-S201 you spy,and she really sings thru a set of Timeframes I have, not a bad sounding receiver to my ears!!I also have a JR-S400,but the tuning knob is broken inside the receiver, gotta check that out someday. Rob
They live!
I like the JR-S201 a lot. Mine is feeding a pair of Polk S-6 speakers in my garage system.

the MacGyver system as of this morning. i do not believe i'll be seeing any more growth or change in it for a good, long while. even then, it will only be the replacement of the PHILIPS DVD with a PIONEER DV-09, and the CT-W910R in favor of either a CT-S800 or CT-91. aside from that, what you see is what you will always get with the MacG system...

I made some changes to my audio room. Here are some pics I took. I tried a new technique, using no flash but on a tripod (so it didn't look like I was filming UFOs or big foot) It really captured the sort of dark lighting i had going on in the room.

Nice decks, Dimitar! Two questions, maybe the same answer to both: Which deck is your favorite and why? Which one makes the best recordings?
I took pics of my decks, too.
Pic 1 (spare bedroom) shows a BX-300 riding on an Aiwa AD-F800U; the CR-2A was just visiting the "tape spa" for a head cleaning, roller treatment, and demag.
Pic 2 (master bedroom), another BX-300 riding on a Carver TD-1700.
Pic 3 (living room), a CR-4A with an Aiwa AD-F780U.
Pics 4 (garage), a BX-300 and an Aiwa AD-F780U.
Pic 5 (garage), two CR-1As that work great, but all 4 of my systems already have two 3-head decks so these guys will just have to ride the pine -- the CR-2A from pic 1 will be joining them.*fit*
My favorite deck is the CR-4A because I have had it for 20 years and it has been a stellar performer. The best recordings come from the CR-4A with the BX-300s following very, very closely. The CR-4A probably wins because the bias calibration process is more accurate, but it may also be the copper chassis shielding.

Nice decks, Dimitar! Two questions, maybe the same answer to both: Which deck is your favorite and why?
Each of them is unique in some respect each one is a top performer regarding certain criterion. For instance, Dragon - the strongest advantage of this deck is that you can play any cassette and it will sound as good as on the original deck on which it was recorded. Revox B215 - very well built machine, excellent frequency respone, very low wow & flutter due to the 4 direct drives, it makes copies identical to those of the original. I had small issue related to the MPX filter in recording mode with it but I found workaround. BX300 is the greatest cassette deck you can buy with little money - excellent simple design from Nakamichi. I have very early edition of Nak RX505 which is with very large idler tires which I was unable to find from the whole US. Very well built deck - I remember that I disassembled completely at least 7-8 times until I fix it - did not have a single problem in the assembly, it is made to last (unlike the newer Nakamichi models). Pioneer CT-S800 is made very well and with a lot of care as you know probably - it is CT-91 without the wooden side panels. But sonically is not as good as the Naks and the Revox. But still very well made deck.

Hi Istvan,
You must be referring to my friend Juan's "old school" t-shirt. Juan is a serious TapeHead in his own right (his deck of choice is a Tascam 122 MkII) and I have been working on him to join this site...
I am a member of the stereo2go forum (http://www.stereo2go.com) where discussion centers around boomboxes and walkman portables. That picture was taken at at a meeting we had here in Florida last year. We had over 50 boomboxes and other cool toys in a room. What a (ghetto)blast that was!
Take care,

A classy system, Linn and Naim components are a great match.
Whatever became of the Scottish turntable industry. We used to make some really well regarded tables and tonearms, Ariston, Fons, CJ Walker, Source/Odyssey, Strathclyde Transcriptions Developments, Systemdek, Syrinx and Zarathustra (Simon Yorke forerunner that I believe was made there)
Now there's only Linn, Sonik Sircle and Audio Origami which means we're holding on, tenuous grip mind you. Maybe AO will pop up with a table one day.
Rumour has it Systemdek are working on a totally new design.

Stuart,
Yes, in the mid 80s it really did seem that Scotland had cornered the UK T/T market. Of course, Linn dominated at the top end and pretty much ensured everyone else became back-runners. I think the last recession did the rest...
I think that Fons were an early victim of the Linn/Ariston/Fons fall-out and legal wrangling. the spirit of the Dunlop Systemdek lives on with Audio Note, still making a version of the IIX (bloody good T/T by the way - I snap these up wherever I can find them so I can get vinyl newbies off the blocks for not much money). No idea what happened to STD or The Source. A few dealers I know really liked The Source but pressure from Linn and their dominance in the mag reviews meant that few were sold. Syrinx, of course, live on as Audio Origami...
Plenty of other UK T/Ts have gone; Logic got swallowed up by Manticore who themselves went out of business (rumoured to be because of warranty issues with Logic products), CJ Walker, Heybrook, JBE, Zeta, Oxford Acoustics, Voyd, Mission, Royce, Oak, Pink Triangle (now The Funk Firm)... have I missed anyone? Revolver seem to have been briefly resurrected but not sure about their current status. Are Lumley still making the Stratosphere?
On a more positive note, Linn are still here and doing very nicely with the LP12, Rega are still knocking out great arms and T/Ts at real-world prices, Michell are still here despite losing John Michell a few years back, SME likewise. Hadcock and Helius seem to still be around and Loricraft are still restoring Garrards and even have a new version for sale. Roksan are still making some great turntables and a superb unipivot arm that's really something of a bargain. I think even EAR have a turntable but have only seen this at a show a few years back. And Townsend keep coming up with new versions of the Rock. But do they count as British..?
Furthermore, there are quite a few relatively new UK companies making some superb T/Ts; Conrad Mas' Avid, Simon Yorke, Nottingham Analog to name a few....
Yes, if AO come out with a T/T that could be very interesting... Never come across Sonik Sircle. Do they have a website? I'll take a look.
stuartypoorty
02-12-2009, 05:20 AM
EAR have the Diskmaster table.
Sonik Sircle do have a site which looks fairly humble, still little acorns.
SME are launching the 30/12 and are developing other arms and tables.
Interestingly, a former GB Tools employee (manufacturer of Mission Mechanic and Zeta tonearms) has his own arm; the Dark Energy Mechanic or some such - try Pink Fish Media or Hi Fi Wigwam for images.
Didn't the Voyd morph into an Audio Note.
Lumley have The Stratosphere and Heliosphere.
Connoisseur and Dais are both long gone.
I guess in retrospect I shouldn't fret as the industry is fairly healthy, with tables from budget level to near state of the art, so there's a deck available whatever your income.
Mignun67
02-12-2009, 06:12 AM
Of course, Dais! I knew there was one I had missed. Isn't there a connection here with Nottingham Analog? I still recall lusting after one fitted with the then-new Helius arm at Tonbridge Hifi in my youth... Little did I know that the T/T I had then, that was so dismissed my the flat-earth cognescenti at the time, would be so sought after today. It was a Sony PSX800 - so unfashionable then in the UK with it's quartz DD and linear tracking arm. I ended up practically giving it away in a trade-in for a Manticore Mantra...
And going back a little earlier, a couple more I forgot about, The Gale (still looks so contemporary!) and Transcriptors who seem to have been resurrected recently...
I'll look for info on the Dark Energy Mechanic. I'm a Pinkfish member but can't recall seeing anything...
Incidentally, I know of a Lumley Stratosphere with Graham Phantom arm that may be for coming up for sale soon. What do you reckon is a fair price for this?
stuartypoorty
02-12-2009, 06:55 AM
Last time I saw a Dais was in the window of Walrus Systems, London. Not so long ago either.
Quite a few Gales on Ebay from time to time, Turkish seller as I recall.
There is no fair price for the Lumley/Phantom - out of my league. There's a secondhand Heliosphere/Rega for sale for around £1,500 which might be indicative of the other package...around £4K I'd guess.
Erratum; Gray Dark Energy/Gray Mechanic - neither the two forums I suggested, but Zerogain.

This not in my system but in my garage. A Juliette 600. I found this at a local thrift store a few years ago. I didn't know what it was at first because the cover was on it but when I opened it up there it was, a portable reel to reel. Cool!
I think its' a very sharp looking deck and it actually works! Everything is in great condition except for the logo missing on the inside. Never seen another like it and I've never tried to look it up either so it may be a common item but its still pretty cool!

Thanks Nando. My Otari is currently in the crawl space waiting for the next time I do some more live recording. I pull it out now and then, but if I use it- it has to sit on the floor in front of the stereo. I really have no room to place it on something. The 707 deck was lucky the space I was going to use for a preamp- worked out to be big enough for the Pioneer. Now all my tape decks are on one side.

I'm readying to set up my stereo system during this upcoming weekend. I've had these Pioneer Elite components in the dark for the past five years, waiting for this moment. The Pioneer Elite M-90 amplifier, the bottom component, provides up to 800 watts per channel down to 2 ohms. Not pictured here is my Elite CD player. And I'll be, finally, putting some hours on my Esoteric V-9000 cassette deck. I'm contemplating using my Pioneer HPM-150 speakers. Oh, my poor neighbours: they had a 6 week respite during the time my system was out of service during the master bedroom rebuild.

Scott - how do you like the sound of the B&W speakers?
Though B&W is not everyone's cup of tea, based on saying you can get better speakers for the money, I like their sound. They are neutral sounding with tight tight bass and lots of punch. Excellent on voice presentation, great spacial presentation, and clean highs. They work very well especially with female voices. For the 7" woofers in mine, the bass isn't bad considering its not in sub territory. Apparently the 602 speakers are most people's favorite from the 600 series of those years. Im not sure how the current 600 series is- Im told they've improved. Must be quite a feat since the replacement for the 602 is a smaller speaker.

Hi Web Police,
In my living room, I use the Pioneer Reference CLD-95 to, regularly, watch laserdiscs on my 55" Sony LCD TV. I, still, buy used laserdiscs. In the last batch I bought, we watched "2001: A Space Odyseey." Just as good as DVD for picture quality, and much better in sound reproduction than DVD. And that's without using the Elite SP-99D Sound Processor. I sure would like an Elite MJ-17D MiniDisc Recorder. Is that the one you had?

That is the one. I had two of them and at one point they were selling for ridiculous amounts and I sold both of them.
All my components had the wood side panels. In a moment pf weakness when the market was sky high I sold most of my Elite/Reference series components except for a M-90 and two C-72's. Some current views of my system. Unlike in previous incarnations, it's now difficult to photograph-especially from a direct front view vantage, owing to its dimensions, the size of the room that it's in, and the fact that the window is positioned in such a way where only diffused, ambient light comes in (it faces north), which wreaks havoc on the lighting with reflections, glare, and "pointing the camera the wrong way". It looks better in person (in my humble opinion), but I did the best I could with the camera.

Matt- do you wire up your components before screwing them into the rack? Just wondering how you got all the cabling in there.
It was a royal pain in the ass. Thankfully, it was a one time job that I have no intention of doing again.
Anyway, the way I did it was first, after determining what component would go where and how it was to be connected, I did a visual estimation of how long the needed cords would have to be. Then, I'd connect one end of them to one component. I'd then take a "sticky note" and clamp it over the pair of cables and note where it was to go (i.e "mixer line 4 in" or "Monitor 2 Out"). Phasing wasn't an issue because like most folks, I follow the standard of "red goes to right". So if the other was white or black, it went to "left".
I staged or mounted the components with the cords just dangling in an unholy tangle of "spaghetti" until they were all in place. After that, it was a relatively easy job of just plugging them all in and back-coiling the cords as much out of view as possible. By design, I tried to make at least some of the patchbays accessible for possible additions or changeouts. Particularly with the mixer. You will notice that it's mounted one increment below the topline. That was deliberately done. See the panel right above it with the "Samson" logo? It's removable and all of the cords are right behind it, as that's where all the ports are.
vinyldavid
01-27-2011, 03:21 PM
I do that as well, but I put blue painters tape on the end of each cord if I am doing a big bundle at once (like my video system, which includes analog 5.1 surround). Otherwise I just usually remember what's patched where.

Well, it's not quite a system, just yet. I thought I could get my new system up and running this weekend, but the weather was just too nice to be inside. For now, I've gathered up some of the components for the master bedroom system. The room measures 10.5' X 13.5' with an average-sized walk-in closet. I'll have to give some thought on my arrangement, so it won't look too crammed.

Hi Scott,
I got the boxes from Gordon for my own pair of Pioneer HPM-150 speakers. These are the same packing boxes which the pair of NOS HPM-150s, being sold at Innovative Audio, were packed in. The boxes come in handy for moving, as I've just done when I brought them upstairs. The IA speakers sold immediately, but Gordon didn't figure the only thing I was eyeing up were just the boxes for my own Pioneers. The buyer of those speakers, fortunately for me, wasn't interested in the packing boxes, at all.

It gets better, yet, Perry. She was about to let me use the Pioneer speakers as night stands, because it looked like I was cramped for space along the short wall, near the bed's footboard. That's where the stereo stand will sit. She had a laugh at your comment.

Very nice, Steven. I have yet to see another Pioneer CT-3000 cassette deck around. You were lucky that one popped up on the forum.
Nando.
It's great, but I have one problem I haven't been able to solve yet...
It has a hum/ground fault and I figured that grounding from the Ground terminal on the deck to one of the two present on the SA-8800 would solve that. NOPE. Maybe Nakdoc can explain what to do. I know from an early age that some decks required a ground connection but touching the terminal should silence the hum SOME...

Here's a sneak peak of the updated system. This is before finalizing the placement of the components on the stand, tidying up the all the wires with convoluted tubing, and a little glass cleaner to make her shine. First impression of the sound performance: I'll be spending plenty of time in the new dungeon. More pictures and commentary, later. Next week, I hope to begin catching up on at least four mix tape swaps with Tapehead members.

With the Elite M-90 amplifier, what a great pairing! Although, the Pioneer Spec amp would be more in keeping with the vintage of the speakers, I think they are a perfect match. Also, I covered this in another thread, long ago, but I bought the pair of Pioneer HPM-150's at my local mini flea market for $50 each. I had a professional at Speaker City replace the surrounds on the woofers. This is, also, the first time I heard of having to break in speakers after installing new speaker surrounds, which they did at the shop.
Bruckner9 is going to hate me for this, but, I placed the Ariston Audio RD-80 turntable atop the preamplifier. I did buy two Ikea Lack side tables, specifically, to be used as a stable turntable platform. Because, I've taken up much of the back wall with my system, it only leaves me an adjacent right corner to place the table, which I didn't want. Dave should be happy to know one of the Lacks is, already, in use for my son's system.

I have never been a fan of the Japanese speakers but the 150's were an exception.
I believe they were based on the JBL 100's with modern improvments.

Thanks for the compliments! And thank you for featuring my system on our home page, Matt! I've shown alot of patience in waiting, until now, to get the system components together for this moment, in a new room. My Elite gear was stowed away for at least five years. The stereo stand was bought well over a year ago, and, probably, isn't available anymore. The HPM-150s were being used daily in my downstairs bedroom, but were just loafing with the power amp I was using. The Esoteric V-9000 cassette deck was used only for a short time, after I bought it, then packed up. The dbx 222 Noise Reduction unit was new, and has been unused, until now. The BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer was used for playback in my older system, but I may use it for recording this time around. The dbx 400X router is indispensable, and I've routed all the ICs through it. However, I did want to have a second turntable and second R2R as part of the system. I don't know how I'll fit those in. And there may be a few other sound processors I'd like to experiment with. I chose the low profile look for the system, as I didn't want to use any towers in such a small room. I do have a nice tower for rack mountable components, but I'm saving that for my Pioneer silver gear. Once we're moved upstairs, I'll repaint and refloor the downstairs bedroom and set it up there.
Thanks to Lee (laatsch55) I have a wonderful Pioneer equalizer to use, too. The SG-9500 looks and works beautifully. I'm looking for a pristine veneer wood case for it, and I would be willing to swap a New In Box wood case for Nakamichi 600 series components to get one.
I'll get back with more pictures and commentary on the new system. If braxus or retrokeeper ever gets a chance to visit me, they'll have an opportunity to listen to it.

Thanks Daren! I just made my first recording on this system, last night, for my son. It was just 30 minutes on one side of a Maxell XLII 60. I have this mystery open reel tape, I picked up, which he wanted me to record onto casssette. I wish I knew who the artist is/was.
There is a slight buzz, (only, noticeable through headphones) I can hear through the dbx router, I have to remedy. But, I don't hear the buzz coming through on the recording I made. I'm hoping it's just a patch cord. I routed the two cassette decks, R2R, and two sound processors through the router. I set up a second R2R on a table next to the right speaker along the window wall. If I like the looks, I may retain the table, as I'll need to place my LPs and reel tapes close to the system for any future recording sessions. I think, there are at least 6 mixes I need to catch up on: Yours, braxus, laatsch55, shadowlord, close652, and a new UK member.

Thanks Lee. Yes, the Phase Linear PL-8000 is a rebadged Pioneer PL-1000. I answered your question, eventually, in the other thread. I didn't quite catch it amongst all the pictures I, recently, posted, so sorry about the delay. As well, I don't think Gordon is going to commit to buying the 10 pk of speed control ICs, because his technician managed to get all three turntables running: the two Pioneers and the Phase Linear.

It seems there are more than a few Pioneer collectors within the Tapehead community. I, only, just checked out your homepage. You have some choice Elite components, too.
I haven't pushed the system, but the HPM-150s love the current set-up. I was thinking of adding another pair of smaller, satellite speakers. I want to achieve quadraphonic surround. At first, I was going to use my Sansui QR-4500's pre-amplifier outs to do that, but the Elite C-72 is just too good to omit. I do have an NOS Pioneer QD-210 Quadraphonic Decoder I could patch in, however.

I just looked up what the QD-210 was as I'd never heard of it. Boy is that a neat little unit, no frills SQ decoder. Nothing wrong with that by any means, but should you ever come across a QL-600 (http://www.soundsclassic.com/listpix/pioneerql600.jpg)or 600a it has some nice eye candy with 4 blue meters. Its an add on peice to a 2 channel system. Just stick in between the C-72 and M-90 and it'll amplify the rear channel. Only draw back is that its a measly 10w per channel. With your M-90 you'll drown out the rear pretty easily hehehe. I used one for quite a few years on my A-717, but switched over to a Yamaha DSP-e300 sound field processor during the 90s' and early 2000's. Now i pretty much just run 2 channel, and the SP-99 Dolby Digital decoder I have now gets relagated to movies and the boot leg Dark side of the Moon 4 channel DVD :)
Maybe some day I'll get on the front cover. :) I'm remodeling my basement and hope to make a custom cabinet for all my gear this summer sometime. Should look better then the crap shelving unit it was on.

Hi Mike,
I'm going to experiment with the QD-210. I can't remember whether I had an Operating Manual with it, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. I can use my Pioneer SA-9500II as the rear channel amplifier. I think, TH member westgate has a few QL-800s. But, I sure like the looks of the 600(a). The 600A would be nice to use, as I picked up a pair of Leak Sandwich speakers at the local mini flea market two days ago. They are 15 ohm speakers rated at 15 watts. They are meant for a tube amplifier, and in the mid 60's these British speakers were a technical marvel. I'll post pictures of the Leaks in the "Speaker" sub-forum, later.
It, only, took me 5 years to get to this point of showing off my present system, so I'm sure you'll be ready to carry the Pioneer torch not long from now.

Hi Scott,
The Esoteric V-9000 has Dolby B, C and and an MPX filter. I'm not too happy with these pictures, so I'll, probably, pluck it from the stand, and take pictures of it out of the stand.
When I first fired up the system, my first complaint was a slight buzz, noticeable with headphones, and while with the dbx 400X router was engaged. I'm about to begin recording tonight, beginning with your mix tape, exclusively, from vinyl. I have lots of tunes to pick from, as you requested.

Esoteric V-10000 was the first cassette deck in the world with Dolby S.
Nando's V-9000 looks exactly the same as the 10000 just without Dolby S.
The Esoteric V-10000 is one of the rarest decks on the planet, it took me quite a bit to find a picture of it.. only for Japan's market.

Well, I narrowed down the cause of the hum in my system. The left channel of my M-90 amplifier is suspect. When I fired up my stereo tonight to try a few mix tapes I had bought at Pearls, I was getting progressively worsening distortion coming from the left channel speaker. I can hook up the CD player's outputs directly into the amplifier, thereby bypassing the rest of the downstream components. That's when I discovered the bad news. I'll be dropping it off at Innovative Audio this Saturday, as Geri and I will be in Vancouver to celebrate her youngest daughter's birthday. I'm going to put my Pioneer SX-1050 receiver in service for the time being. It's too bad, as this was a great component combination. I hope it won't take long to fix.

Hi Lee,
If it was the little Kenwood, all I'd have to do is rap the top of the housing and the signal would come back clear as a bell. I won't remove the M-90 amplifier cover, as it still has the tamper label affixed to the housing screws.
But, I'm looking forward to hooking up the Pioneer SX-1050 in its place, temporarily. Just on a whim, I pulled out my Pioneer QD-210 SQ decoder this morning before having found out about the M-90 failing. So, it may be SX-1050 for fronts, QD-210, and the Pioneer SA-9500II for rears if it 's going to take too long to repair the M-90. I'll post what I find out about the amplifier fault. I, really, didn't think I pushed it too hard playing Shpongle the other night.

So my Pioneer M-90 amplifier goes into Innovative Audio, tomorrow. When I spoke to Susan this morning, a customer had picked up an M-90 that was just repaired. His amp lost the right channel and it was about the same amount of time since he last used it. The "Use It or Lose It" rule does apply in real life. Today, I unpacked my Pioneer SX-1050 receiver and slotted it in where the M-90 had once been. I'm breaking in the receiver with some soothing jazz from the Pioneer RT-1020L, for the time being. I'm just using the power amp section of the receiver, as I removed the shorting plugs at the back of the receiver. I didn't want to go through the hassle of reconfiguring all the patch cords. Here's a 33 year old receiver not, even, breaking a sweat powering the Pioneer HPM-150s. This is embarrassing for the Elite.

I just started in this hobby this summer and it was kind of soothing to see so many others that have the same disease. I was born in the mid 50's and recall that "Sansui" seemed to be the name that usually rattled the windows of most parties I attended so that's where I started off almost 42 years later. I wish I had done more research before I jumped in head over heals and made a few mistakes. Like a magnet I'm slowly but surely being sucked into "Pioneer" as my number one like and we all know how expensive it can be to make mistakes like that. Don't get me wrong, you guys are true audiophiles and I'm just a beginner but what caught my eye was the SX-1050 that you are using as a backup until your Elite is repaired. I just ordered a 1050 and it should arrive in the next few days. It kind of feels like a few days before Christmas and can't wait until it arrives. Without even hearing them and because of this thread I realize I should probably start looking for a clean set of those HPM-150's simply because anything that looks that cool has simply got to sound like heaven. My hat's off to all of you that posted and I love vinyl LP's and have a couple of nice middle of the road turntables. I'm on the edge about getting into tapes yet but I'm sure it's going to happen sooner or later after much research. My therapist would advise me not to open threads like this as I still have young children to put through college. What a great way to love music and keep my bank account empty at the same time!

Hi Ed,
Welcome aboard! Thank you for your comments. I would love to hear more of what you use in your present system. Once you get your SX-1050, let us know of your impressions of it. There is a good upswing in vinyl availability, Most of my records are used, but in good condition. I kept all of my meagre collection of the '70's, which has been dwarfed by the amount of records I've collected in the past 5 years, alone. And for me, it's absurd to be paying upwards of $300 a ticket to see the big name artists. So, last night, Geri and I got comfortable with a few glasses of wine and enjoyed Neil Young's "Live Rust" in its entirety. And that's why I pieced together the system I have. $600 can give you a healthy start towards purchasing hi-fi equipment, as I see it!

Here are some dated pics of my setup. Moved to his house in the spring and unfortunately the landlord sold the house and we were forced out. Just moved again into a new place and have yet to snap some shots of my current setup.

Sure do miss the sound in that room. Not to mention the thick door i could close and not bother too many in the house supposing i didnt turn it up too much.
Will snap some recent pics soon.
Edit: The Dual 505-3 and the nikko tape deck are no longer in the main setup. Replaced by Pioneer PL-71 and the new Yamaha KX-800U.
