I recently won at that auction site a pair of these for a very reasonable price to complete my bedroom system. They will eventually move on to one of my childrenīs roomīs systems, if and when I get my hands on a good and cheap pair of floorstanders for my final bedroom system.
I understand these German made Sony bookshelf speakers, which are apparently the entry levell model on a well succeeded line of SS-B speakers, comprise a Seas ( Norway ) Soft Dome cloth 30 mm. tweeter and a VIFA ( Denmark ) 130 mm. doped paper mid / bass driver in a substantial and reasonably thick MDF enclosure. I expected a somewhat larger motor assembly on the woofer, but what the heck, for 40,00 I canīt complain.
I never cared much for japanese - particularly Sony - speakers, but it seems these were aimed at the European market, and it shows. Internal cabling is decent, and binding posts significantly better than your middle-of-the-road jap cheapies.
Soundwise they just floor my Celef ( ProAc ) Domestic IIīs and KEF Carina IIīs in the mid / high frequencies, with extended and detailed high frequencies, with excellent imaging, in an uncoloured way my other small speakers can only dream of.
Bass is tight and clean, though it wonīt go very deep. Not a real surprise, all things considered, but whatever there is just sounds right, without that chesty thump so often associated with mini-monitors. I guess this is the kind of speaker that really cries out for a good sub-woofer
Iīd be interested to hear if any other Akers have come across this line of Sony speakers, and what their impressions are.
