I will have to consider if it at all is possible to answer that question.
During the last 40 years there has been maybe 100s cassette decs and beyond 50 R2R's.

How can anyone remember that?

It's like asking an old man keen on cars: "What cars did you drive in your life time"?
:-)

I kept the milestones, though: Revox B710, Tandberg TCD 910, Tandberg TCD 440A and Lyrec Frida R2R.
Somehow, I wish I had kept some of the Nakamichis, some of the Studers and some some of the odd ones.

The Lyrec is an amazing piece of engineering art and soundwise is she the top of the pops.
This machine was the one to replace Nagra T, Studer and Stellavox TD9 on radiostations and in studios around the world (including the Swiss).

Around $15.000,- from new..................on order..............built to specifications.
A lot of gold in the early eighties.

Aircastle 3" rim-drive reel-to-reel (Christmas 1968--c.1970/'71)
Sears portable cassette recorder (Christmas 1970--c.1979) (original mike and cassette survive)
Electro-Brand 3 1/4" rim-drive RTR (1972--1973)
General Electric 3 1/4" two speed capstan drive portable RTR (1973--1974) (an odd part or two survives)
Realistic 505A 5" two speed portable RTR (Christmas 1973--1979) (a few parts survive)
Toshiba PT-862D 7" three speed stereo RTR deck (Christmas 1978--1980) (I have some of the circuitry for it, and the service manual)
Realistic SCT-16 dual capstan stereo cassette deck (1979--1981) (heavily canniblised electronics and cabinet survive)
Wollensak T-1500 7" portable two speed tube portable RTR (1950s vintage; 1980--1988)
Realistic-by-Teac TR 3000 stereo RTR deck (1981--1984) (a few parts survive, including the heads)
Teac V-770 stereo cassette deck (1988--1997) (was cannibalised into a processor used for enhancing some vocal tracks in the studio; power supply let out the magic smoke about 9 months ago)

I'm a RTR guy mainly. So here goes.

Have had various small tape recorders with 3" reels back in the 60's. One was called Parrot Bookcorder & looked like a book opening & closing & fit on a bookshelf.
A GE Symphony-Took up to 7" reels. Big plastic piece of junk, but with 2 microphones & big, detachable speakers, it was like heaven when I was 12 (1967).
In the 70's an Ampex sound on sound. Don't remember the model #, but have seen similar ones on ebay. I'll track it down. Started me off multitracking.

Went through a bunch of cassette decks over the years. Can't remember any model #'s, but I recall a Teac, Fisher & Kenwood. Plus those cheap portable ones. Had one from Lafayette electronics. I remember using cheap Lafayette Electronics tape. The different lengths of tape had different color labels. Can recall pink, light green & yellow labels.

I now have the following:

Tascam MS-16 1" 16 track
Tascam TSR-8 1/2" 8 track
Tascam 38 1/2" 8 track
TEAC A-3440
TEAC A-3340S
TEAC A-2340SX
TEAC A-4010S (2)
TEAC A-2000R
Intermark Cypher VII (early 60's)
Crescent Model 907 (early 50's)

Some of these are in exceptionally nice shape, notably, the MS-16,3440,tsr-8,a2000r,one of the 4010's & the cypher. Every one of them has to be calibrated correctly, which I'm reading & learning about & intend to do myself.

As far as cassette decks go, I have the following multitrack recording decks:

Tascam 424mkIII
Tascam 234 Syncaset 4 track (in beautiful shape)
Tascam Porta 05 Portastudio(broken)

Currently in my stereo setup I have a JVC TD-W309 double cassette deck, SONY CX-300 300cd carousel, not analog but mighty convenient, & the A3440 hooked up to a Pioneer SX-3700 receiver & a pair of DBX Soundfield V speakers, which sound pretty damn good. Used to have a nice Sansui turntable. Don't even remember what happened to it. A few years ago picked up a crap Stanton STR8-80 turntable just to have something. High torque motor, like I'm gonna 'scratch':-oo. Cute lights, looks nice. But has no weight to it. Dreaming of a JVC QL-Y66F with that big, fat platter or even better. A Neumann VM70 cutting lathe would be nice. I mean, long as I'm dreaming...

I currently own the following decks, I have never parted with any decks, this is my problem, I have too much of this stuff, wait, it isn't a problem, it's a hobby...here we go in roughly chronological order, portables (Walkmans) not included:

Sony Tc-186SD - my first piece of hi-fi gear, bought in 1976
Sony TC-K630 - my first 3-head deck, bought in 1989, a nice one
Marantz SD4000 -not as good sounding as the TC-K630 with metal tapes, but pretty nice...when its working (blasted "dampened" cassette well door!)
Pioneer CTF-650 - was given to me years ago, need some kind of a fix, one of these days!
Pioneer CTF-950 - Pretty good, used it for a number of years for playback, but now tapes are backing up...it needs some TLC which it probably never got from the previous owners, some good friends that gave it to me.
Sony KAIES - bought new only a few years ago...the only deck I own with Dolby S...currently hooked up to my pre-amp to dub LPs. I walked into the "Sony Store" one day and it was there...it was their last deck, just put on display, they gave me a few bucks off the list price because it was a display model.
Luxman 117? - not bad, it's currently hidding in my closet as I don't have enough room for this stuff!
Marantz SD3510 - a real funky looking deck, I only use it for playback, when I'm not listening closely...I can't believe someone else (Webpolice) has actually owned 2 of them??
Marantz PMD520 - certainly the best "double deck" ever made, it's built like a tank, makes great recordings, the only double deck I will ever own!
Nak Dragon - currently sitting in my closet, well...one of these days I will get around to using it again...

I don't currently own a R2R but I'm currently shopping around for one, hopefully within the next few months...those Otari's are looking pretty good...

Yes, I had two of them about 15 years ago or so. I owned them for the novelty. of analog meters and a drawer type cassette drive. The didn't have the best sound but they were unique. Below is a link to a picture of this deck.

Agreed...not the best sound out of all my pile of decks, the Marantz SD4000 has better sound, which I believe dates from around the same era (early 1980s?). Also, I think they made a later version in black that was essentially the same deck under the skin.

BTW, nice website, haven't seen this one before. Looks like another "favourite" added to my web-browser.

Teac A-2300 SD, Teac A-3300S, And one Sony Dual Cassette Deck thats new in the box and was never used. Not sure of the Model tho its currently in storage.
I still prefer the Reel to Reels and love the new RMGI Tapes. I had finally scored a NIB Dust cover for the A-3300S to make that deck complete now. Big->

Cool lists... I'm 52 and got a ??? brand 3" r2r when I was 12. Then a 5" Wollensak at 15 that I saved up $99 for. Then at 24 I got a Pioneer 1011. They are long gone and others in between are also... but now I have:
Cassette: Yamaha KC520
K10 both silver faced and working
Nakamichi CR-5A
CR-5
CR-2A
DR-3 all in very good working order
the CR-5's are my daily drivers

Reel to Reel Teac 2300S
A-3300SR these get used at least a few
times a week.
Teac A-3440
A-3300-2T
Pioneer 1020L x2
1011 all these are rarely used, with issues, some
very dissapointing... the 3440 and
1020L's worked miraculously for a couple of months
then.... issues!!*headache*

When I got back into 2 channel stereo around 3 years back I wanted 10 1/2"
R2R's for my daily drivers (I have living room and bedroom setups that I use daily).... but with the sound I get out of the two CR-5's
they ended up what I use the most, by far.Big->

The CR-7A is in the repair shop right now and my default deck is a DR-10, a late generation Nakamichi.

This was introduced along with the DR-8, in part to appease the demand in Japan and respond to customer loyalty.

It's quite a good deck, even if you're used to the Naks of old, alright the build quality is not on par with the earlier models. Still it plays well, is a discrete three header and has a very smooth transport.

If you're looking for an entry level Nak. this is a good choice, let's face it a lot of the older decks are pretty costly, in so so condition and can be fairly expensive to repair.

I thinks that it. I hope it is in fact. I rotate them - the ones marked with asteriox are out right now.

Also have a Philips DCC-600 - fascinating machine.

The Aiwa needs a bit of attention on the internal bias trimpot. Teh Nak RX-303 needs some TLC on the loading mechanics. Otherwise all great.

In the early 1970's I scrimped and saved for a Realistic SCT-909 stereo cassette recorder. It was a portable, cost me about $300 and was pretty nice actually. No Dolby, but it was made by Hitachi and had a 16 pole synchronous motor in it.

Also was given an OKI stereo reel to reel around 1974 which had a single motor and germanium transistors. Needed lots of work and didn't like 50Hz power very much. It was cute though.. Two speeds, two heads, 7.5" reels max. It sounded nice when it was working, but could maintain speed in warm weather for only about 20 minutes and then overheated. (Converted from 60Hz/120V operation.)

Later in college in Georgia I got a JVC KD-75 cassette recorder, ex wife took that a few years ago, last time I knew it was still working fine. This was probably one of the best cassette decks I have encountered. I had it for over 25yrs..

I also had a pair of ReVox B215 cassette decks, badly worn heads as these were bought used and had been used for tape duplication - sold those on eBay when I decided to pack it in with tape.

Just got an Otari MX-55-T-M mastering deck which is why I joined tapeheads, and a couple days ago a friend gave me an old ReVox G36 MKIII with half track heads.. The Otari works well, and I am in the process of restoring/modifying the ReVox.

i am 26, but i totally grew up around tape. the compact cassette has been a part of my life since my very first coherent childhood memories, (i can remember all the way back to when i was less than five.) and has never left my life. my very first audio component was a mid-90's low-end SONY cassette WALKMAN. after that, i inherited my mother's PANASONIC cassette boombox. made many tapes on that thing, then in 2000, i received my very first component Hi-Fi, inherited from my biological ex-father. of the three components, one was my first cassette deck...

I have been back into Cassettes just recently by accident. I was cleaning up my stereo room (read hovel) and found a box with my old (80's) tape collection. there were 200 or so tapes. I started looking at the titles and went WOW a lot of good stuff that I had neither LP or CD. I also tripped over my old Yamaha K-340 and thought what the hell and hooked it all up. Put the first tape in and went shit this is awful (read the heads have not been cleaned for twenty years). Found some 70% isopropyl in the bathroom (yep I know this is wrong wrong) cleaned the heads and tried again. HOLY SHIT I had totally forgotten what a good tape sounded like. Enough history now the nut bit.

A Pioneer CTF-1250? Any chance you can post a picture of it?

I believe that was Pioneer's TOTL deck at the time. I've got a '950 that was given to me, but it needs some kind of attention....tapes occasionally "back up" when playing back, so the deck then stops. Any ideas what it might be?
I'm sure the 950 has never ever seen any service it all...

I can't remember all that I've owned, but here's what I have now:

Dual C809 (2-Head) (1978)
Technics M245X (2-Head, AX, Full Logic) (1984)
Onkyo TA-2600 (3-Head, Full Logic) (1989)
Teac V-450X (2-Head, Amorphous) (198?)
Sony TC-K670 (3-Head, Dual Capstan, Cassette Stabilizer) (1991) *Added this week, got this one for $5!*

and....a Pioneer CTF1250, which I'm selling this week. Can't afford to spend so much to fix her, so I gotta let her go.;-((

oh, and I know this doesn't count, but.... got a Sony EL-7 Elcaset deck (in process of being restored)

I have a question for anyone here who can offer some info. I have a Teac A3440. Over the winter I worked on this machine including replacing the capstan motor. It all seems to be working and the heads are in reasonably decent shape. One thing I notice though when I turn the output pots full up I get what I would call white noise/thermal noise.
I realize this may be normal for this machine but I am wondering if it is due to it's age, possibly old caps or something. It may just be that this is the norm for this machine. The noise of course can be reduced by simply turning down the output pots. But I though I might get some more detailed insights into this characteristic of the A3440. Anyone?

Nice list, Dave!

been trying to find both a Magnecord 1024 and 748 for a long time now. WHat do you think of them?

The 1024 and 1022 are very well built germanium based machines. I used to use a pair of 1022 machines in the 70's to make promo tapes for bands at college and they took all the abuse of dragging them all over creation etc. A friend of mine has them now and he uses them to this day. We did however go over them with new coupling caps and replaced some resistors with lower noise types. They are a breeze to work on as the elecronics (even the power supply) are on plug in cards. Also the front panel can be removed while its still rack mounted. It also uses standard Nortronics heads and mounts and can easily be upgraded to better heads. There is also a 4rth head position that can be used for mounting a playback head of your choice. Takes up to 8.25" reels like Ferrograph. I want to take one and make new cards and use sub-mini tubes like 6021/6111 etc. Should make a nice project.

The 748/728/1028/1048 are of course vacuum state. The 1048/1028 use compactron tubes and things are really crammed into that little case, way smaller than a 1022/1024 and deceptively heavy. You need to carry 2 at once or one arm will end up longer than the other. Unless you run them in a rack with the optional rack mount adapter they run so hot that sometimes some of the slobber joints under the compactron tubes become unsoldered. The phenolic pc boards also get very brittle from all the heat. The high end response isn't quite as good as the 1022/1024 but the midrange is as good as it gets. Gives Revox G36 machines a good run for the money. Has heavier duty motors also and they have balanced inputs and outputs also as they were a pro deck. It has 4 head positions also. And 15 ips...Takes 10.5" reels.

Cool. I think that they look really cool, and the ones on youtube that I have heard seem to sound very nice. Nice to know that they have the performance to go with their looks. I'll have to pick one up if I ever see one locally.
