Perhaps the only downside of the ZXL may be it's belt driven transport and consequential increased W / F specs. Although with the proper belt fitted and cleaned / lubricated transport, whether the increase can be heard is dubious.

Anyway, out of curiosity, I now have a modified deck that overcomes this potential weakness.

The modfiied deck has had the Direct Drive Transport from a ZX-9 fitted while retaining the ZXL heads and all functionality. The theoretical benefit of this is a reduction in W / F by 50% and possibly a futureproof lack of reliance on the original Nakamichi 8096-C Capstan belt that is very scarce. Can't wait to get the deck back to compare it with the standard version of the deck. Have a look:

Thanks for the offer - Fast Forward - but I have decided to dedicate my projects to the Nakamichi Classic Mechanism decks to avoid getting back to having too many items laying around either waiting for me to acquire manuals or parts, or just waiting. I enjoy the repair process and then usually just sell the deck on to make way for another. Will probably soon reduce the fleet down to a couple of ZXL's as 5 is really too greedy, and they are enormous at 528mm wide and 19kg's so take up a lot of space too.

Willy Hermann did this mod for you, right? He's worked on several of my Naks and always a great job.
