I just took delivery of my second 5050BII 2. The first one (below on granite) convinced me it was a keeper and that a second one would serve as a means of always having a functional deck around.
As it turns out, deck # 2 (above on end table) is by far the better machine. (paid same price as the first one via ePay) One owner machine. I picked this one up personally. The PO has a recording studio with an Ampex 8-track 1/2 inch tape machine. The Otari was serving duty as his mix-down unit. He bought it new 1984. Sold to me 2008. It's always nice to know the history.
(I'm good for now and won't be bidding on any Otari's over eBay for now.)

Next, I'm sure I'll want to do the external preamp mod some time in the future. Then there is the problem of how to rack all this new gear. Stuff to do. Plans to make. Having some fun over here.

Yes leave some 5050 decks for me to bid on. :P
Good to hear the new deck is in good condition. Hear to many horror stories of being burned when getting something like this. Im slowly gathering tapes for the day I'll have my own deck.

Doug, I was wondering how that turned out. What did it sell for?

It sold for $405. and the snipe came in at the last 10sec or so.
Also- just got word that the C.L. Revox PR99 had been sold, whomever it was did well @ $75.

Is that a Granite surface plate (like that used in a machine shop) under your Otari. What are the Dims?

Yes, thats 18 x 18 x 3 inch granite. It is machinist grade (lowest grade possible) and I got it at Grizzly for about $30. I've also used this granite beneath my turntables from time to time. Handy object to have in the listening room, imho.

Thanks Doug. $405 was on the high side with the limited details that one had. I assume the seller never got back to you as well.
Keep looking. The B3 is a nicer machine transport wise then the B2 but I'm not all that convinced it actually sounds better (even though I was told it does) using the Otari electronics inside.

Yep, never got back to me. oh well the right one will come to me, sooner or later!
Grizzly, I have their catalog I'll have to look. I also have a local supply house that has 'em.
I uasually get spikes @ madisound, have you spiked yours?

Well, then consider yourself lucky. When the seller doesn't reply, there are major issues he doesn't want to address. The "Sniper" will have some work on his hands, trust me!

Well... watch this guy on e-bay and see how long it takes for him to flip it.
Ebay ID- clio.inc (http://myworld.ebay.com/clio.inc/)
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZclioQ2einc
it will be a pickup for him as well as he lives about 50 miles from the seller.
He always has RtR's for sale three at the moment.
THe pis has the serial number so If anybody buys from him WHEN it comes up for sale, you'll know its background.

Doug,
Pretty damn funny. You should work with the Sherlock Holmes! Or the Scooby-Doo gang, at the very least...... :-oo

Yes yes, of course. Wasn't making fun at that, just poking fun that you are so prolific in your detective-work. I for one am most appreciative and will LOL when the guy tries to resell that POS.

Nope. The two Otaris are just standing on their original feet. I presume these decks will, in some way, be affected by their siting method and also by the quality of power supply, power cables, interconnects, etc. Just not sure yet by how much.
At the moment I'm most interested in the "tape head preamp" thing. Probably next step.

To the OP: Thanks for sharing those pictures. You got some "perdy" nice gear there.
And yes. Glad to see that others are watching for questionable sellers as well. Thanks for the hjeads up.

Yes I'll be on the look out for a BIII late this year or later, so hopefully it won't be this one up for sale.

Thanks..!
My primary interest is / has been vinyl but I do have to admit to some considerable distraction with this open-reel tape biz. Anything that sounds as good as tape just has to be included.

Hey mo prob. didn't even cross my mind (as thick as it is) you would be busting chops.
We all have to watch out for eachother when possible, when it comes to e-pay!
