I have decided to settle on using RMGI 900 tape as my standard 1/4" tape. I will get my decks aligned to it. Anyway has anyone used this tape and if so, what are your impressions on it?

I will also for retro reasons get a couple Maxell XL-I tapes off Matt, but it won't be my standard tape.

Hi Brax, I have 2 reels of the 900-type, have recorded on one so far. Excellent results, the tape records well, and it seems like you can't overload it! I pushed the meters way into the red, with no audible distortion. The outfit I bought it from says customers love the stuff, they have never had any complaints about it at all.

I have never gotten a clear answere from anyone on whether it's better to use the IEC equalisation or the NAB eq. for this tape. ??

I went back to get a couple of pancakes of 900 this past Wednesday, but they were out-of-stock at the time as some guy came in the other day and bought the 3 cases they had left (they still tapes on metal reels). So I bought 4 pancakes of 911-series instead. Haven't had a chance to record on the 911 yet, should by the end of next week.

I've been picking up some used NAB reels to load pancakes onto, in order to make it a bit cheaper. I'll let you know how the 911 goes.

Ferrite,

How would you characterise the sound of SM900?

Interesting thread above between RMGI tape and ATR tape. I might have to try the ATR tape.

I think I will also try some RMGI 911 and ATR Master tape before I settle for sure on my standard tape. Others seem to say the ATR has a better clearer sound.

I have not tried the SM 900, so I cannot comment on it. But I'm surprised you missed my ATR Tape Review (http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=2062). Hopefully that'll answer some of your questions.

And oh yeah. Congratulations on your purchase! *Hi5*

I'll read your ATR review next. Thanks for the Hi5. I've been waiting to get a BIII deck for well over a year and a half now. Had the funds and got my chance to bid on one, so I jumped on it. All I hope now is I receive the deck without damage.
