Could not believe my luck this morning. Put a throw away bid on a really nice Nakamichi 700 Tri Tracer thinking this will go for a fortune, well bugger me it went cheap as chips and it's all mine. Lucky me.
I can't understand why this unit did not pull big bucks. It's less than I paid for my 1000 tri tracer, while fine mechanically and electronically, was pretty rough round the edges so to speak.
These old naks have a sound all of their own due to the great mechanical construction coupled with quality discrete electronics. You need to hear one in good condition to understand what I am saying. There was a good reason these things were so expensive when they were originally released onto the market. If you can get hold of one of these old buggers in good nick, I guarantee you will love it.

That deck is practically mint for a 30-year old unit! Nice pickup!! I really like the great pics that were included with the auction -- you can easily see how well preserved the deck is; one this nice is a rare find at any price.

Enjoy!

Very nice machine. It appears to be in excellent condition. It seems that the time to buy high quality machine is now ... I have dreams about something like Teac Z6000 or Luxman K4 .. but who knows, I may grab one cheaply these days..

Congratulations,
Dimitar

I've got one of these beauties and I love it. I had my eye on the one you won thinking that why not have two?! The one you have looks to be in wonderful shape. Classic Classic machine one of the first high end decks, reviewed by Julian Hirsch way back when in Stereo Review. He was impressed as you will be but I think you already were/are. *Hi5*

The deck arrived this afternoon. I offered extra dollars for the seller to pack it well, and guess what he did just that 2" thick styro cut to shape all around the deck and the deck wrapped in plastic sheeting. It's arrived in fantastic shape, did not even have to recalibrate, it was spot on.
The auction description was accurate and the sound is just like the little brother of the 1000 tri tracer should be.....I'm gob smacked.
This thing would have to one of the best preserved 700's on the planet. I compare it to a car nut finding a vintage mint Ferrari for $2000.
Just doing the first tape now, starting with a TDK D90 Dolby B from CD.
Will try a TDK SA next of the TT with no NR.
Scuze my enthusiasm but this is gunna be a big week for me with a Lux K-05 and the Phase Linear due as well.
I want to keep 4 or 5 decks max so...no fuggin more tapedecks.

Sacrilege! Feeding that thing a TDK D is like acquiring your Ferrari above and scrounging gasoline from the lawn-mower to feed it for driving....

Said that a million times myself at least ..... *grin*

I agree, But it sure shows what it can do with not much. Ha Ha. Besides only taping a bloody CD...I'll save the good tapes for some good vinyl.

Hi,

Congratulations on finding that deck, and in that shape..
And also compliments to seller for packing it right.
There is nothing more depressing than receiving the beautiful Vintage stuff that survived a 30 years or so without a nick – just to get trashed by poor packing and shipment guys attitude combination.
Happened to me a few times. Once with Luxman k-04, after sending the seller almost blueprint
on how to pack it, he send it to me in a carton box, naked. Guess what happened..

Anyway, it looks like a real tape week for you, did I see correct, you are also due to Lux K-05..?
Give some info about that, I been chasing this deck ( K-04, in god state..) for a few years..

Regards, Davorin

For those interested in Nak 700s, make the effort to get the 700 II version (same goes for the 1000 II) It will be more reliable.

Aw Shit. First chrome tape I fed it and it chewed it up....bugger
The deck was noisy and stuttering on fast forward and rewind. I put a junk tape in and it spooled about a 2" of tape out.....Had a bit of a think about this and it dawned on me that the voltage might be a bit low. This deck was US configured for US 117V and I was running through a 115V step down trannie.
I did the conversion (Thanks Nak for the option) and changed it to 240V......... Guess what, smooth and fast Rewind and FF. I'm 3 parts the way through the tape I did on it last night and its faultless *hope* *hope*

Ooooooo, good luck man. Usually an issue like that is an idler tire. Did you change/update yours or is this one of the gear driven ones?

I've had a bit more time with the 700 tri tracer. The deck sounds very good and I am very pleased with it's performance but I have found an unusual problem. The deck performs faultlessly record and playback with all tapes excepting Maxell UDXLII (late production english version). I have posted an enquiry on Naktalk to see if anyone else has had this type of problem with no response as yet. I have looked closely at the tape guide on the feed side and I just does not look right. Does anyone have a working 700 tri tracer that could take me a digital picture of the tape guide?.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help
Cheers
G

I have one of these in working order. I also have the same Maxell tape to try and after continuous play for over an hour there is no tape travel problem or tape edge issues.
And for the life of me I can not get a decent digital image to send to you although I will keep trying. Its' not easy to get a clear shot the way the thing is set up.

Sorry for your troubles Graham.

Thanks for your efforts. A picture would help but don't stress if it's to difficult. It would be nice to get the deck to work with all tapes.
