Here in Hungary (and in most part of Europe) one litre unleaded regular is about 2 USD, so a gallon is about 7.6 USD. *headache*

Here in Orange County, SoCal, unlead is going in the $4.50-$4.70 ballpark.

Despite having two cars, I only fill up a couple times a month. For going to work, I ride my bicycle a mile to the train station, take the Metrolink train 20 miles and then ride another mile to the office. Stress free commute and I get my exercise as well.

I wouldn't place much stock in the idea of gas prices coming down a LOT anytime soon. Though legislation has been introduced in Congress that would esentially get the speculators out of the market and require that ONLY producers and consumers/distributers who take actual physical delivery of product be allowed to trade in oil futures. Should that pass, you could probably look to see prices come down a bit as the speculators bail the market-if not the country, being that the Feds have them under the microscope.

But that alone will still not get prices down to the $2 ballpark. That still doesn't address the weak dollar, worldwide demand, Peak Oil supplies, the hodgepodge of boutique fuels located in different parts of the country. And don't EVEN get me started on the whole ethanol hoax, which has got to be in the Top 10 of all time greates heists ever committed on the citizens of a country by its government.

There's no one single reason, person, or entity behind it. A long list of seemingly unrelated factors have all coalesced to give us the so-called "fuel crisis" we are in today. I have been employed in the downstream side of the oil industry since 2000. So I see a lot of "behind the scenes" and what's REALLY going on. Not a day goes by that some media outlet isn't doing a piece on gas prices. It's pretty clear that neither they nor the public in general really knows what they are talking about. They love to complain. and blame "Bush", or "China", or "Exxon Mobil", or whatever whipping boy happens to be the flavor of the day. Sure those are SOME of the reasons, but most people have no clue what's behind it all. I would love to discuss this further, but breakfast calls.

And so how about all them SUV's gettting 10 miles per gallon, used daily for a 100 mile roundtrip carrying one occupant?

Just paid 4.24 at a Costco. Good incentive to put my Suzuki 850 back together and start riding.

Try this one on for size. I took this picture last weekend on my way home from Laughlin, NV. This is in Needles, CA, off Interstate 40 right near the AZ/CA border.

Of course not a car was in sight. Especially seeing that if you continue maybe two miles inland on Hwy 95 just over the bridge into Arizona, the price [relatively] nosedived to just $4.29

I'd call that BOHICA.
