I have always wondered, is there some advantage to having giant tape path side rollers in cassettes? I have noticed a lot of late 80s/early 90s EMI, Capitol, SBK, etc.. tapes exhibit these, and I always kind of liked them.

LOL no pulling of legs here. What I'm talking about is the rollers on the bottom sides of each tape, along the tape path. Compared to every other tape I have seen, tapes from EMI and Co. of that era are usually sporting huge ones..
Here are some different tapes from Virgin and Atlantic for comparison. They have normal sized rollers.

The first ones you showed were "metric" sized rollers, when that was legislated by Congress and the craze took over engineering and manufacturing.
