I saw an odd looking tape deck at a thrift store today. It was a Teac A-400. The tape door was positistioned vertical on the face. It had the bulkiest eject button ever. It was 19.95 and fairly beat looking so I passed on it.

If it was offered for half that price,I think I would have given it a closer look,those old Teac's were built well.No doubt it would need a good cleaning and new belts,and who knows what else,but at least it would have been worth testing it at the thrift to see if it even worked.If not,and for the right price,it's next resting spot would be on my workbench!!The matter of fact,a Teac occupies the bench right now,a slightly newer one than the one you found/seen,it's getting new belts and a cleaning.So far,not a bad sounding 2-header,with DBX and Dolby C to boot. Hi dhboa;
In my opinion this was a good pass. Not only are people selling these on Fleabay much to my amazement, but the unit was such a poor design that we had a lot of trouble adjusting the cam system for it to work correctly.
There are so many nice and newer decks that I come across that paying money for a A400, A160, A170 or any of the really old decks other than the A450 is a waste. The A-400 also had the infamous slide switches for the record section. These failed at about 3 years and are no longer available.
On the good side, when it worked properly it was a simple transport to work with. Favorite decks like the C-3RX does a much better job performance wise.
How do I know all this? In case you do not already know, I used to work for Teac.

Sam,

Thanks for the info Sam. I was kind of wondering if the transport being posistioned vertically caused any problems?

Hi Guys,
Both the C-3RX and the V-1RX are superior units to the black newer plastic stuff that a lot of people like. The V-1RX was Teac's first produced direct drive motor model as well as being the top of the line for that year. I have V-2RX and V4RX units too and they did a good job but the V-1RX is the one to have of that model year- You just have to get used to vertical meters while the V2 and V4 RX had a nicer florescent meter type that was horizontal.
The C-3RX specs can be found at -

The mail lady delivered it today. I watched her toss it around in the truck and then drop it on the concrete porch. I didn't say a word. I know from past experience that it would do no good. The only damage I found was a broken VU meter bulb that I know worked when it was shipped. I had some on hand and replaced both of them.

After a thorough cleaning and demagnetizing, I tried a tape. The right channel is fine, but I get nothing but loud hiss from the left channel. The left meter doesn't move. Any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this problem? It's not high end and I don't have much money in it, but it's a nice visual match with my other TEAC and Marantz gear. I'd really like to get it to work.

I didn't mean to post this here. I meant to start a new thread. I can't find a "delete post" option. Sorry.
