This site has now passed 100 members! Lets see how long it takes to get to 1000.

-which is why the 100 members milestone is in some ways a bit of a hollow achievement. And exactly why I placed a time limit on [inactive] memberships.

Matt,
I've noticed at times that a guest is in the online people looking at the site. How does that work since I thought you had to be a member to see what is on the site? Or is the guest thing only for the main page so you can sign up?

Guests should NOT be able to see anything besides the front page (i.e. the TapeHeads picture at the top). To see what I mean, log out and then type in the site url (http://www.tapeheads.net). You will be denied any further access. This holds true even if you post a link to a specific post on another forum. If someone who is not a member clicks on it, they will get the same error message. But yes. Obviously there has to be a place to login/join. And it's all there on the front page.
I have it set that way on purpose. I don't want a free-for-all and people who have no interest in us and the site snooping around. They have to take the trouble to register. And even then, they have only six months. If that time goes by and they don't make a post, their membership is automatically truncated. I'm pondering over whether or not to chop that down to 90 days (three months). But I haven't made up my mind yet. Last thing I want to do is even begin to move in the direction that I wanted to get away from: Rules, laws, restrictions. All of that BS that permeates certain other sites. TapeHeads was meant to be a laid back, casual, and fun place to talk about audio in general and tape in particular. That's why I didn't take the trouble to post a complex array of "forum rules" that I need to spoon feed you with.
We are all adults: use the noggin that the Good Lord giveth you. Pretty simple, right? I mean if I see something that is a flagrant violation of good ettiquette, yeah. I'll take corrective action. But I'm not going to sit here in wait and ambush my members looking for a reason to kick them to the curb.
Because I had that done to me. And it sucked. I didn't like it. Why would I want to do it to someone else?

You're right. Makes sense. Gotta have secure borders.
Anyone who's seriously into this special eccentric world will take the trouble to register.
As far as members who never post, I suspect a lot of people are just beginners & may feel they have nothing to contribute. I'm 52, & have multitracked on casette portastudios & some R2Rs, but when it comes to calibrating & learning what's inside, I'm a total beginner. So, when someone who actually knows something posts, I tend to shut up & go into learning mode. Hell, I thought I'd have nothing to say, & God knows I'm not the most social person around (pretty reclusive, actually), but here I am posting again. Maybe forcing lurkers to post or lose membership is a good idea. Once they do it, they'll like it. And one post in three or six months isn't asking too much.

just want to say, I found this site from another member from ak and want to give a shout out for this site. I really admire the work that DES-LAB has done, especially in his Maxell tape documentary, job well done.
glad to be a member and hope I can contribute something also.
my music taste is from the late sixties to the early eighties, heavy on the 70's
but now I am trying to expand my music taste alittle bit more, easier listening
just recently started acquiring audio gear from that era, also Albums & Tapes
right now, I have a problem of buying tapes, in the last couple of weeks, I have bought 397 of them. I am on tape over kill.
Albums on the other hand , second burner, is at about 200.

I've tended to be silent and learn. While I've recorded plenty of tapes in my life they tended to be recorded on cheap cassette decks. For years I've spent most of my money collecting records and then had none left over for a good home stereo. I've just started in recent years to start building a decent sounding stereo. It's probably just mid-fi junk to the hardcore audiophile crowd but it's a big step up to me. Right now my living room system is comprised of a DENON DRA-685 receiver, a TECHNICS SL1210-MK5 turntable (with a bunch of the KAB upgrades), ONKYO INTEGRA TA-2090 cassette deck, a SONY SCD-CE595 cd/sacd player, a pair of ADVENT LEGACY speakers, and on the other end of the room a pair of HARVARD 3000 speakers (I got these from a guy at work and they sound pretty good for some off brand, no name speakers!). I also run my TV and dvd/vcr combo player(both RCA) through this set up. In the bedroom I have a BOSTON ACOUSTIC 6.1 speaker system run through a DENON AVR-1907 receiver with a DENON DVD 1930 CI dvd/sacd/cd player and a YAMAHA K-1000 cassette deck and another RCA tv AND JVC vcr. I have an ALLIED 8-Track player out being serviced. So overall I felt the need to keep quiet and learn. Also I hate forums where everybody feels the need to make cute and unfunny comments to each other in an effort to drive up their post count.

I wouldn't be ashamed of your gear. Some of it pretty good stuff. I am a big Yamaha fan myself--smokin--

Another interesting fact is that the top 10 posters here at TH have made roughly 75% of the total posts. Now if them other 108 members would make their fair share of posts Des could have a name that tune contest. )dance(

Well now there's one more active user.
Even though I am from another part of the world than most users here, I still am keen on this tape hobby....................or listening to music hobby, as it really is!
I use Mini Disc, 3 cassette recorders, R2R machine, TurnTable, FM tuner, CD machine, Hard Disc studio recorder, PC, Microphones, DVD, HiFi-VHS, 78'sTT, TVsound and whatever else I can get my hands on for sending through my preamp and my two mono power amps to my loudspeakers or through my head-amp in the R2R to my earspeakers.
I hope there will be exciting activity in here.
