I was looking for a particular tape that I made 6 years ago and was in a slight panic because I couldn't remember where I had it stashed. The tape is of Bach Suites for Unaccompanied Cello played by Janos Starker. What makes this tape special to me is it is one I recorded from the original Mercury Living Presence box set and if you know a little about this set you know that it is quite pricey on the used LP market. Extremely well recorded and great music by the way. The one I had, "had" being the operative word was a gold label promo which made it even more desirable. Anyway the situation for me 6 years ago after being laid off from my job was of course desperation so I placed it on ebay to see what it might fetch and it did fetch a nice sum from a gentleman in Japan. Didn't want to sell it but you gotta do what you gotta do.
The point of the story though is at the last minute I realized that I should record it before I let it go!! At the time all I really thought was just to use a premium cassette of sufficient length (Maxell XLll 110 was my choice). My mindset then was a good type two of any brand would do. Now I realize that I should have used two premium metal tapes of shorter duration for such a prized possession. Then I don't believe that I even had a metal tape on hand.
I did find the tape and it is playing right now and beautifully by the way on the Maxell XLll 110.
And so... do you have a story of a treasure that may have gotten away and what tape would you have used?
The rest of the story is that you can now get this set newly pressed from Speaker Corners so I could get what was once lost for a lot less money but there is something about never having the original that still gives me a pang of regret.

Well I was looking on Ebay for a prized Aiwa 9000 deck and came across one within a short time. Bid on it and won, but over paid for it and the unit was a lemon. A year later came across one in my own country brand new never used and the asking price was less then what I paid for my own deck. Had I had the money to get it, I would have, but I was broke at the time and the deal passed on to someone else. Now nothing has come across on the 'Bay since like that, and Im still stuck with the lemon.

Too many deals I've had to pass up on Ebay due to lack of funds. Wasn't meant to be.

I've passed on some gear at thrifts or yardsales but usually had a good reason to do so. Too little space, too little cash that day, too many decks already. I can't say I've really regretted it. But I did leave my original stereo system from college with my wife and kids when she became an ex-wife and THAT I did end up regretting. I was able to recover some of the pieces, but two of the prized units were lost (one in moving and storage) in getting the remainder back to me. Since they never used the system, and had no idea how to care for it, the mistake was thinking it eased the transistion not to "clean house" of stuff when I moved on. I should have just kept it, but at the time it was "just stuff". I miss that stuff, for sure.

You were unlucky with your Aiwa Brax. The machine I brought is very good but even then it threw a take up reel belt about 4 weeks after I brought it. I did the belts and now it's working beaut. That last one on Epay went for around $ 450 from memory, from the description it just needed a door open/close belt. What are you going to do with yours?

Im waiting for the time to take mine back in to a different shop to see if they can do SOMETHING with it to bring it back into spec. The last shop basically said they won't work on it anymore. Problem now is parts for the 9000 are getting hard to find.
