I gave my girlfriend a stereo system with a cassette deck a while back, but she doesn't have anything to play on it...so I thought that I would change that.
Deck: Akai GX912
Tape: Ice Cool II (Thanks, web police!)
The way I mix tapes is that I just pull the LP's I am sourcing the songs from, and put them in a random order that seems to work....then i tape them :D
This is all vinyl-based.
SIDE ONE
My Way-Sinatra
Runaway-Del Shannon
I Fought The law-Bobby Fuller
Whole Lotta Shakin goin on-Jerry Lee Lewis
Blue Suede Shoes-carl Perkins
Eve Of Destruction-Barry McGuire
Celestial Soda Pop-Ray Lynch
As Time Goes By-Play It again Sam
Aspen/These Days-Dan Fogelberg
You've Lost that Lovin Feeling (Lincoln Mayorga and Amanda McBroom)
Horray For Hollywood/Growing Up In Hollywood Town (Lincoln Mayorga and Amanda McBroom)
Behiend the Lines (Phil Collins Version, not Genesis)
END SIDE ONE.
SIDE TWO
Last two Tracks of side one of Face Value (Phil Collins)
The Nest (Jimmie Spheeris)
For Roach (Jimmie Spheeris)
Monte Luna (Jimmie Spheeris)
Seeds Of Spring (Jimmie Spheeris)
I Am The Mercury (Jimmie Spheeris)
Long Way Down (Jimmie Spheeris)
Let It Flow (Jimmie Spheeris)
Seven Virgins (Jimmie Spheeris)
Come Back (Jimmie Spheeris)
I thank you (Sam and Dave)
Tape's DONE!
How'd I do?

Don't you think side two is a little heavy on Jimmie Spheeris ?
Maybe not. :)

She loves that Lp.....and only about 5000 copies of the CD were made, before his estare shut the operation down (jimmie died in 1978 of a motorcycle accident), so they go for MEGABUX on ePay...

I think that's awesome you are doing that! Kudos to you. Taking a cassette tape and compiling your favorite songs to give to your sweetheart is definitely a lost part of Americana, ever since the format was left for dead in the 90's.
I remember during "those" years for me (1988-1993), I made scores of tapes for the various girls I had crushes on and/or dated. It was a lot of fun. A truly 'personal' gift that speaks to the soul, even if just a collection of music.
I suppose one could still take the same concept and do it today but with a CD-R. But just somehow it's not the same.

Thanks Des!
The deck I gave her is a technics M224, a MOTL single well deck of pretty good performance.
These are actually NOT my favorites (a couple are, but not all), I wanted to give her something that I thought that SHE would like, according her tastes (which are very close to mine)
That feel is definitely NOT there with a CD, as you actually have to FIND the music source, and physically RECORD it in real time to a analog medium...not just throw an iTunes playlist together and click burn (-:
Favs on that tape:
My Way
Runaway
All phil Collins
Eve of Destruction
You've lost that lovin feeling
Celestial Soda Pop
More favorites than I realized, but I put it together based on her tastes....

Vinyl, how did the tape turn out? I have only used a few of those tapes and have never critically compared them to name brand tapes.
As far as making compilation tapes, I used to make them for girl friends as well as friends and family members. I have even made cd compilations for the same people, however I did record them in real time with my stand alone CD recorder. Back in the late 1990's, probably about 1997 I bought a Marantz stand alone cd recorder that would use ordinary computer cdr type discs. Unfortunately after buying this recorder I sold my tape decks and got rid of most of cherished new blank tapes. I most of them on ebay for around $1 a piece for metal and rarer type II tapes. :(
Oh the stupidity. Hind site is always 20/20.
On the bright side I still have the Marantz CR recorder and use it quite often to dub cassettes and albums to cd's. It isn't a professional model but an early consumer model where you put a music cdr into the tray let it detect the disc and then you can pull the tray open with a dental pick and swap the music disc for an ordinary computer cd and it will record just fine. This used to be a big deal when music cd's were a $1 a piece and computer cd's were .25 cents piece. :)

Well, I have not played it for her yet, as I am in summer school as of now, and she is sitting next to me....this afternoon I am going over to her houze, and then we shalllsee how it turned out....
I monitored off tape for most of the recording, and it sounded pretty good......not perfect, but acceptable.....
The deck this is going to be used in is DEFINITELY not cxapable of extracintg all of the performance that is available from any cassette, besides commmercial ones, so I doubt that the tape will amke any noticible difference in the reproduction, unless it's like a new production SOny HF or TDK D os sumtrhin of that nature;....
She likes the track listing (-:

Good work Dave. This is something I used to do for girlfriends as recently as '99/00, although with a Philips mini-system. Looks like you put a lot of work into it, and I'll bet it sounds great too.
I agree this is a lost part of American culture, making an actual mix tape. Since my lady recently noted that she has a cassette player as well as CD in her car, I'm thinking of doing it again.

Wow who would think that in 2008 you can still make a mix tape for a special lady. :D
