Thanks to 1979TDKAD-C90 and Dazen1 for inspiration for this thread.

This is track-list of my last (originally) Mix Tape but now also a Mix MD.

Just out of interest Pat, how many MDs do you make a year (including swaps etc)?

Also, do you plan the track list before recording or do you rely on the editing features to fine-tune the final selection and running order?

I usually have a rough idea before I start and would scribble it down on paper then record the tunes.
But its only when listening back that you really know if its worked or not.
Like you, I would never intentionally just throw on a bunch of tunes unless there is some continuity.
The great thing about MD is you can re-arrange the running order so easily and also you don't have to worry about length of silence between tracks.

In answer to your other question, I think this is going to be a busy year recording wise and hope that anyone who does an exchange with me will not be disappointed.

Round one to MiniDisc!

I'll look forward to seeing how this thread develops Pat. *bigthumbup*

Hi all,

I may have been the first recipient of the 'Live Acoustic' Mix Pat created on MiniDisc. Daren and Les received the same material recorded onto cassette. I appreciate the tremendous effort Pat put into the selection and sequencing of the tracks.

First off, I like the blend between songs without pause. It came off well, and at times the transition was so subtle it was hard to distinguish when a new cut was about to begin. Each side (in my case, the beginning of each of the two seamless tracks) started with female artists who were very endearing in their performances. I might add that Sheryl Crowe with Stevie Nicks make a great pairing, as featured in one of Stevie's studio albums. There isn't a song that doesn't belong on this mix. "I Want To Be Seduced" is a fun track and I found myself laughing with the crowd at Mary C's antics. Randy Newman is an artist, I didn't appreciate as much, until now. I had recently gifted my son, Christopher, a mint Randy Newman Live LP because he loves Randy Newman's music. Three of my favourite acoustic tunes were from Freddie Mercury, Chrissie Hynde, and Rory Gallagher. "No Cover Up" by Duke Special is also a good one.

Pat surprised me with a chocolate treat, packaged along with the MiniDisc. Thanks Pat!

After Geri came home from work tonight, she enjoyed a glass of Malbec while listening to Juliet Turner.

I'm becoming more familiar with my MD deck, and I find recording levels at -3 dB to -4 dB seem to be the sweet spot for a maximum peak level for this deck. I, even, think some MD blanks, such as TDK and Sony, can handle higher transient music peaks without distorting the signal, much better than some other brands. And I thought this was an issue strictly relegated to analog magnetic tape.

I hope to return the favour to Pat by creating a MiniDisc Mix following the same theme he began. I don't think I can splice the tracks together as well as he did, though. Thank you for a well-thought out and enjoyable MD, Pat.

Keep cranking out those tunes, Pat. A friend of mine in Vancouver, Robert, has been scouring the nearby thrift stores for me. I hadn't seen him for more than 18 months, until this past Saturday. Of the items he collected for me, he had found 19 sealed MiniDisc blanks. I'm thankful for that, as the Sony retail stores, I frequent, don't seem to stock MDs anymore.

And a "new" Pioneer Elite MD deck is being set aside for me. It's a gem, and I hope it performs as well as my Sony has. I've been looking for this particular model for a long time.

This was a fun mix to create! This recording is probably more telling in a snapshot of myself. You know how you can sometimes glean a little information from the type of music Tapeheads enjoy to play. This recording provides a bit of info on my personal nature, although at times I can be introspective - most Pink Floyd fans are.

I don't want to reveal anymore until after Pat receives it. I have track titling and a paper track sheet to complete, before sending it off.

I like that track selection, Pat! As a Neil Young fan, do you have "Greendale", which he and Crazy Horse came out with 2003? It's a story-line album which at first I was tepid about, but enjoyed more as as I listened to it in its entirety.

And I haven't seen Neil Young in concert, yet. I just refused to pay $250 per ticket to see him. Geri and I have been to see Mark Knopfler twice for the same price as seeing Neil once. Is that a good value?

If "Greendale" interests you, I could record it to MD, or cassette for you.

Yes I would love a copy of 'Greendale' Nando, thank you.
I have been lucky enough to have seen Neil four times in the last 16 years but as you said, the current ticket prices are just too much to bear, so may not be seeing again!

By the time travel, babysitting, parking costs are all factored in it can be an extremely expensive nights entertainment.

Pat: I will be happy to do that for you. You'll realize how nice this compilation of tunes blend together if you listen to it uninterrupted for the entire album of "Greendale."

It's a good thing I asked, as I was about to mail your Beer-drinking Mix MiniDisc out to you. Big Kelv and shadowlord have their Special Edition mix cassettes headed out to them, already. Everything should be ready to go out on Saturday.

My goal is to have a good enough home system, that I can achieve the same experience, as seing my favourite bands live, without the expense of those darn ticket prices.

We, usually, attend one rock concert a year, and last year Geri and I enjoyed a kick-arse concert featuring Randy Bachman and Fred Turner. Talk about adrenaline-rock!

Pat: Thank you for some classic tunes of the 70's from Rory Gallagher. I was about to record Neil Young & Crazy Horse's "Greendale" onto MiniDisc for Pat, but the audio CD was missing from the jewel case. Along with the CD is the bonus DVD Live performance of this album's tracks done at Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland. Perhaps, I can record the audio portion from DTS Stereo onto my MD deck played from my Pioneer DVD, SACD, DVD Audio player. But, I would like to do the studio album, as well, once I find the missing audio CD.

What is most notable about this album is it is the final album to feature Crazy Horse as his band.
