sips gas, oodles of saftey features but, these are scary times. never before in US history has so many tiny death-traps been bought in high numbers that still have to share the roads with 5,000lb leviatans.

Imagine FF's Town Car hitting one of those. Yikes!

So, besides the mpg rating do they also give the car a hang-time rating for when it's rear ended by a semi?

Some people are truly determined to reinvent the wheel (so to speak).
Such cars are hardly a new concept despite their makers claims to the contrary. Check out these two oldies-but-goodies I spotted not far from me.
The BMW makes the "Smart Car" look like a Buick.

And no matter how many air bags or detection systems you put inside such a car, there is NO way around the laws of physics. If any of these Le Petite cars has an incusrion with the likes of a Tundra or a Suburban, the "Smart" diver isn't getting out of that wreck any way but on a gurney.

I guess how fast they go depends on how much of a tail wind they are behind then aye? When I moved from my Mustang to a Mazda, that was really downsizing for me. I wouldn't think what one of these cars would be like.

Ahh! The BMW Isetta, the entire front is the door, the steering wheel swings away with it, always reminded me of something the quirky French would put out.
And the lovely Fiat Topolino 500, always a favorite of mine, cute, peppy, I don't fit in it though, my head goes out through the roof, I'd take my chances in that little lovely Italian design on a nice day tearin' through the mountains north of tucson, of course it'd have to be the Arbarth version with the extra 25hp to move up any incline *whipslap* faster, faster!

You hit it right on the head. Smaller cars equals higher death and injury rates.
I wonder how many drivers of these things would see they have decided to trade "blood for oil."

The new mini cars are very safe. The cars are designed around a pod. Back in the 70-80's friends were into racing boats. Lots of lives were lost in the high speed boats. Once the boat leaves the water the tiniest bit it's toast. Racing association demanded a change in design. Now you see pods floating in the water after a spectacular crash. Realise, it's like hitting concrete at well over 100mph. Same engineering is in the cars. As far as the big SUV's, if they get T-boned by a small sedan chances are they will roll. Small cars aren't the prob big cars are. I see dumbasses convinced that they need a $70,000+ Hummer to drive around mid-town Manhattan or downtown L.A. all the time. Being in advertising we're the ones that convinced them
