Has anyone ever tried recording on a type 3 tape in chrome position and adjusting the fine bias to compensate for the difference between type 2 and 3 tapes? I just wonder if a fine bias adjustment would be enough to use a type 3 tape. Reason I ask is that the last version of a Maxell XLI-S tape was termed as a hybrid type 1 and 2 tape, which is exactly what a type 3 tape is. And I was able to audible set the fine bias to where it should go. Anyone?

Also an interesting tidbit on BASF type 3 tapes:

It's mainly the EQ that differs from type II (120µs) to type III (70µ).

BIAS and Rec Level fine tuning might be needed as it is with alle tapes.

Even swapping two tapes of same brand and model requires bias and record level fine tune seperate for each channel and for each speed if speed is changed.

Dolph,

Isn't chrome also 70 and type 1 is only 120?

I think I've some cassettes like that... but sealed. They came in a special box, designed to be mounted over other boxes and with a mechanism to exit the tape from the box without removing the boxes from their site.

Don't know if they are common or not.

Of Course.
Sorry.
My mind slipped there.

Neat collection Reeler. I have read with that link I posted above that that perticular tape had a tendancy to shed off the tape emulsion from the base. Have yours had that problem?

Don't know, really never used them. Two still unopened and some are opened but I think never used. I remember that this was a gift from an old man when I copied into cassette some old open reel tapes... I think that this was more or less in 1990... I was a teenager!
