Spotted one on the old kijije, for $365. He says it works. Good machine for the price, if working?

well fingers crossed that it works properly. Do you think it's worth it? I wouldn't want to get ripped on Kijiji

Check the heads for wear as they dont have the longest lasting heads on them. Replacement can be expensive even if you can do it yourself.

From my experience, check fast wind and rewind. They should both be strong and fast. Any slowing is a sign of bad bearings.

Sure will. I am also bringing along a maxell UD 35-90 to test (Paul Simon - "Graceland" / Fleetwood Mac - "Tango in the Night", both from LP's). I will keep in mind these tips, thanks!

Hello!

I agree. Mine — admittedly almost not used — sounds wonderful.
The legend has it that Jazz at the Pawnshop was recorded on an A77...

I picked it up for €80 here in France, unwanted and not working, but absolutely mint. A few new caps, a new NE555 later it was back into service!

It has trounced every cassette deck I've tried so far, including top Naks and Beocords (yes, I know what you think, and you're wrong — Magnum PI like).

A77 is a very nice deck. Good thing is that there are tons of them sitting around not being used and that means you can be picky. I just repaired one that was in like-new condition. Zero rust, corrosion, dirt or dust. Those things can really be bad for a deck. Storage in extreme heat or cold is also bad. Ask about that. If the deck is at all rusted or corroded or was kept in a basement or attic, I would pass. The are plenty of A77s out there in good shape. Good luck.

I will check. he's also selling some tape along with it (a bunch of 7" and 10.5"). Machine looks to be a MK3/MK4 and looks in great shape. Gonna see if I can go check it out today

Good news guys! I got the A77! It needs a cleaning, and a tad of lube. Still it runs good. Also one of the VU's seems broken. It is a Mark 4, 7.5/3.75IPS quarter-track. Along with it I got the original manual, the brochure for the whole set, a price list that shows all the variants of the A77, along with price in $ CAD. It also came with a metal black ReVox reel (7"), and a plastic black ReVox reel (10.5"), the original NAB adapters. The guy also gave me a bunch of tape (mostly Maxell 35-180, 50-120, 35-90, Ampex 20:20 (not sticky?) (373), Ampex 406, 2 Sealed TDK Audua 1200), and a few other empty reels. I'll get a pic very soon!

Second is of all the stuff I got WITH the deck (not pictured is the reel I was playing at the time, a Maxell UD35-180 and it's takeup reel, an Ampex 20:20

Oh yeah. And all that ampex 20:20 (about 4 reels) is affected BADLY with SSS. So I will probably use the reels either for new tape, or splice on 2x 2400ft reels of 0.5mil tape (to make long, "party" tapes

That's great! So happy for you!
Welcome to the club of the A77 MkVI owners and enjoy!
I have always liked the NAB spools. They do nothing to the sound but definitely look great!
