I was thinking of adding another subwoofer to my system when money allows, but wanna ask people on here what they think of haveing 2 subs of the same make and model in their systems versus 1
Is there a difference in imaging? I know low freq are non directional, but sometimes the upper freq that a sub produces can be heard.
Is placement easier than just haveing one in the room.
What if I have 2 subs of different manufactures, but the same driver and amp configuration, is there a noticable difference in sound output from on manufacture to the next? If there is, can it be adjusted by their internal crossovers, to sound similar.
Also if anyone has any leads on a Velodyne CHT10 let me know.
I have one, but want to have 2 just for the extra low end slam at lower volume levels

If you're gonna go with Velodyne, why not go all the way and get the DD-1812 SE.

the most impressive system i have heard to date uses (4) 18" subs in columns. nothing wrong with more than one sub.

In the 80's I used to use 4 - 15" drivers a side in DIY columns and that worked really well.

I have 2 DIY cubes with Dayton Titanic 15's now and drive them with a Yamaha P2250C amp and active sub eq and xover.
The problem I had was that I couldn't run them high enough to blend seamlessly to my ESL's so I built midbass towers with 8 - 5.25" drivers each to handle 75 - 225 hz and that does the transition very nicely and with realistic dynamics.

As for my Homely Theatre system I use a single Dayton Titanic and plate amp and it works fine for that use...

I enjoy using it as often as possible though I use my "office system" for background streaming radio stuff when not seriously listening. But I am always looking for an excuse to fire it up and crank it. It was really cranking in that pic and I am always surprised the cat stays in there and even goes and checks out the equipment. That room is normally closed off and he only gets to go in there when I am in there.

I use my old Mach Threes (ported 15's) as subs. Can't say there's much advantage to having two of them, since the room is pretty small and one would surely fill it.

I got another Velodyne CT100 comming in about a week*yip*
Now looking at my setup should I put the subs under the towers of polks to get the best sound or shold I remove that moutain of cassetts and place the sub there?
The reason I ask, is I have a bad back (plus Im lazy*grin*) so I wanna do this once and forget about it. Plus dont want the wife to know that I got another sub*ill*
Yup she still does not know I bought that HK AVR receivera couple of weeks ago, and it sits right out in front of the rack*eyepop*

Robert: Just a consideration, but you don't want any of your magnetic tape close to the subwoofer, as the speaker magnet is strong enough to cause some problems. Dual subs in your sound room. Wow, you do like to feel and hear the live experience.

Now, here's a sub:

With all that gear, no wonder you have a bad back. My back is sore from looking at all that gear stacked up like that.

I wish I had more room, but I dont have the space to move those cassettes anywhere else at the moment. My wife supports my addiction, but there are limits, and I dont want to find out right at this moment what that limit might be*grin*

I know it is not pretty, but it sounds great, and its functional*bigthumbup*
I live in a duplex at the moment, Im hopeing in the next several months that I move into a house. Its in the works!
I cannot crank this system at all*mad* My neighbor hates me*frown*
I was also for warned by my landlord. Any complaints and I will be evicted*devil* I guess thats one way of getting out of a lease*grin*
To also add on the great sound, its not even perfect as I would like, first off due to room constraints, the sub that sits in the right corner is way to much even turning it down its still to much. I wind up turning it off most of the time. I like sound that is balanced and even. Thats why I want another sub.
Not so much for bass slam, but balance.
No BOOM BOOM, just the sweet feel of air all around*hearts*

My Velodyne came in yesterday, and I now need to find it a permanent position to install this Bad Boy.
For those of you that have 2 subs, I have enclosed a pic for placement which one would you all recommend?
26156
I see Dave has his placed up against the conners, not sure that is the ideal position! If it works for him thats great!
I have some wiggle room, but not much*fit*
Now I have aquired the most reavealing sound I have not heard in a long time*drool*
If there is Bass, its there. For recordings that have none, it there too!
These 2 subs blend well to my Polks for music.
I have yet to even try them for HT*eyepop*
BTW I dont care too much for home theater.
Im more into music so this will be setup more for music.
And yes the wife knows that I got another sub. I came clean. She ask me if I was happy with it?

Mine are in the corner mostly because there is no other place they can go as the midbass tower and ESL positions are more critical so thats the real estate that was left. However they eq'd out really nice with no off the chart peaks or valleys to contend with.

Hi Dave I was not slamming u on how you have things setup!*paranoid**no**no*
I dont need enemys*eyepop*
But since I have your attention,*naughty* I know you have played with the setup before you put the subs where they are today, and was just wondering what were the outcomes of placements before their final resting place?
I know you just did'nt place them in the coner the first time around.
Or maybe you did! Im just wanting ideas!
Ok Im bored, at school and I just want to talk sub placement since I have a new toy to play with*btoast*

I did try them in the middle first and it didn't work as well. Because of the tower and ESL placement there just isn't any other way. But because they didn't need excessive eq the corners are ok. Corners are not always bad as sometimes they help bring up the low end if the sub rolls off to early on its own. Its only bad if the corner amplifies the low end to the point it cant be easily eq'd and makes it tubby or muddy sounding. If this room had wood floors the corners definitely would not have worked.

Dave

Are those a sealed units or are they ported?
Who manufactured them, or did you build them?
I first put the subs that I have under that tower of speakers that I got, but I did not like them that way. They sounded great, but since my 7's are my main speakes that I listen to mostly, I decided to place the subs in the corners. I did notice that that since I had to put them into the corners I had to reverse the phase switch to 180 to get them to blend better with the Polks. I really cant play these very loud, and with the Caver engaged to play the Monitor 10's its way to much for this small room, when I tried them. Neighbors left so I kinda had some time to crank this baby up*jammin*
Im sure this setup will please me in a bigger room, but for now Im satisified. I never dreamed I would have all this gear and it all works*yip*
I guess a little elbow grease never hurt anyone*grin*
Thanks for your comments on how things can be applied*Hi5*
Nice to have a forum to discuss how things either work or don't*bigthumbup*
I'll cram in some photos later

I built them out of true 1" thick HDF and lined them with bitumen and cross braced. They are ported and hand tuned. The drivers are Dayton Titanic 15". I use a Yamaha P2250C to drive them and an old Richter Scale sub eq that has a built in signal generator and measurement mic you place at your listening position.

Here is a pic during construction:

Had to carry them upstairs also. No help either as I am the only one here and the cat wont help.

The MTM cabinet in the pic is one of 4 I made for my homely theater setup at the same time. A friend cut all the pieces to my spec. I just had to screw, glue anc clamp etc.

2 subs should be better because it spreads out room modes. Different types - have to be careful with balance and phasing, but still should work and be better. My 2cents *twocents*.

That was an Advent 860 that used for more than 10 years. I bought it when it was only about a year old. I still have the manuals but I gave the unit away when I got my first Barco projector. That pic was taken around '83
