M~

The Maxell Communicator is a well-built type I cassette. It only does a so-so job recording rock music, works better with softer/easy listening music. It's mostly designed for voice/dictation.

The Memorex DBS tapes I'm familiar with are the crazy pastel colored tapes from the early 90's. Back in high school a friend gave me a box of them for my birthday. Despite the goofy appearance, they sounded pretty good in my boombox & car tape deck. I mostly used them to make dubs from other cassettes. However, it's been over 15 years since I've used one.

I bought bunch of the Current Memorex DBS Tapes, however current means 1997 since they stopped making the tapes in the late 1990's. These tapes are made in China but have a fairly robust shell held together with 5 screws and they sound pretty good to my ears when recording. They seem to be of better quality than the current Maxell UR or the TDK D, or the Sony HF series of tapes.

The best thing about them is you can get 15 of the 90 minutes tapes at Circuit City for $9.99, albeit the Maxell, TDK and Sony are all the same price or cheaper.

Well I just checked they don't seem to be available at Circuit City any longer. Maybe I bought out the last of them. They may still have them in the stores, just not on their website:-? They are however still available ot other retailers on the web.

Shop.com has them for $5.99/6 pack. I'm tempted to buy a couple packs.

Yeah, like I need to buy them.

Circuit City had the 6 packs for $4.99 and the 15 packs for $9.99, however neither were listed on the website, but I found them both in the stores about a month ago. Then I did a search using next tag and it lead me to a Circuit City page. I ordered three bricks since they had free shipping on all orders over $24. I received the tapes a few weeks back, and of course I didn't book marked the page and when I search Nex Tag I don't get the Circuit City match anymore. The back of the wrappers says copyright 1997, so I assume they are from the late 1990's, so you can see how fast Circuit City turns their inventory.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.

I received a number of these as part of winning an EBay auction for a box with 360 tapes of various brands.

Well, I pulled the trigger & bought a few bricks from Shop.com. For only $5.99/6-pack brick, it's a better buy than this place:

Man, for that kind of money, you can get 2 or 3 boxes of TDK, Fuji, Maxell, etc...

And I was thinking of sending you a few to review. Oh well now you will have your own stash.

I do remember seeing those Memorex's in places like drug stores & hardware/farm supplies stores like Fleet Farm. I remember those bricks & they had the 90 min. high bias tapes, too. Yeah, there were a lot of tapes quite a few stores used to sell just 3 or 4 years ago that aren't made anymore.

Oh oh, here we go... :D I look forward to a review in the coming weeks. I believe I used these for dubbing when I was younger.

I just got an email confirming the tapes have been shipped, but it's not from shop.com, it's directly from Memorex! They must have some still in stock just for shop.com, because their online store makes no mention of any cassettes.

That is odd, you would think that Memorex or Mem Tech would have them on their website if they still made them. :-?
