With the possible exception of the 1988 version of the UR, or otherwise filling holes in a collection, I can't imagine why anyone would go out and actively seek the lowly UR.

But perhaps there might be an exception. Take a look at these.

Just one problem. With one exception (the red one), none of them ever, technically, existed.

One day recently while I was sitting here with a brain and creative block, I started fumbling around with my image processing program and discovered a way to have a little fun.

All "versions" of the UR shown are different versions of the same picture of one tape. I found that by manipulating the color enhancing a bit, I could "create" some fantasy versions. And I thought that side by side, it would make a cool gallery. Too bad these never really existed.

I also tried this with some of the other tapes. But considering that most Maxell cassettes had heavy black/gold/gray lettering, I wasn't able to produce the array of images as I discovered I could with this UR.

Enjoy!

Wow. If I didn't find that so cool I would tell you that you need to get out more. But, that would be the pot calling the kettle black, and so forth.

I just got a sealed UR-F the other day, that's a pretty nice color.

Matt, this is too good. With these you can prey on other tape collectors and show them what you found under a volcano in Hokkaido/won in a card game in downtown Nipponbashi from the estranged/deformed/disinherited grandson of the Maxell founder........make them jealous. It'll work!! You know what we're like!!

i remember hearing about those; "The Rainbow Collection" a MAXELL marketing man's ill-fated attempt to to make the UR line appeal to a female consumer. based on the test sales, MAXELL was planning on extending the concept to their entire product line. sadly, it was found that the concept did not increase the female customer base by any appreciable margin. as such, that particular marketeer was given the infamous "window seat" and, being an embarassment to a proud japanese company, the remaining miniscule unsold stock was destroyed. you, boss, are a lucky, lucky man. you have in your possession the ONLY known COMPLETE COLLECTION of this ill-fated series. not that you should, but, with the prices these exceedingly rare variants command even individually, you could put them on the bay and easily raise enough out of them to buy yourself a system of STEREOPHILE magazine A+ rank recommended components!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

That is a BRILLIANT idea! Too bad it would, technically, be considered an attempt to defraud someone. At best I would be suspended from Ebay and at worst have a badge knocking on my door.

But to do something like that as a prank? That would be flippin' AWESOME. Maybe on CL or something as an April Fools gag. Anyone remember my infamous "AwDio K'Armelon" ad? I thought it was brilliant tongue-in-cheek humor but obviously the intended satire hit way too close to home for some. And more than a few people didn't find it the least bit amusing.

But that's a long time to sit on such a creative idea.

Maybe I'll take your idea and post it on CL and put the "disclaimer" way at the bottom and see what kind of response it gets.

those people most likely got pissy because they were earnestly excited about those "finds" just to be thunderously let-down by finding them to be a hoax. take it from one who knows; a true rabid collector has absolutely NO sense of humor...
