Vintage players especially first, second, third gens can be hit and miss but can be fun to play with.
This unit is nice looking with a very deep and vibrant blue display. It has a Burr Brown PCM-56HP DAC and is a simple 16 bit non-oversampling setup and this model has Technics moving away from analog brick wall digital filter to true digital domain filter.
Sound wise, pretty refreshing. It does not sound harsh or bright as many older players sounded but has a more laid back sound stage and nice texture. My reference player is my Oppo BDP-83 Universal player and a machine that dollar for dollar rocks. The Oppo has more air, texture and a bit deeper in detail in soundstage but I was impressed with how not too far off this old Technics player was in comparison.
I think the simplicity of some vintage designs can have good effect. It's no giant killer but meh fun for a few $$$ spent.*bigthumbup*
