Vintage players especially first, second, third gens can be hit and miss but can be fun to play with.

This unit is nice looking with a very deep and vibrant blue display. It has a Burr Brown PCM-56HP DAC and is a simple 16 bit non-oversampling setup and this model has Technics moving away from analog brick wall digital filter to true digital domain filter.

Sound wise, pretty refreshing. It does not sound harsh or bright as many older players sounded but has a more laid back sound stage and nice texture. My reference player is my Oppo BDP-83 Universal player and a machine that dollar for dollar rocks. The Oppo has more air, texture and a bit deeper in detail in soundstage but I was impressed with how not too far off this old Technics player was in comparison.

I think the simplicity of some vintage designs can have good effect. It's no giant killer but meh fun for a few $$$ spent.*bigthumbup*

I have never seen a US model in silver. This is an 'FF-1' model, pre-MASH, 1-bit...I have owned a used Technics from that period, actually two.

They get cranky in old age, I had fussy transport controls on one and had little experience on how to fix that. Bummer.

I tended to have bad luck with their 5-disc carousels for whatever reason. Didn't know a lot then.

THE FF-1 denoted Technics FINE FOCUS 1 Beam laser at the time. Mine is identical to the pics I linked but is called the SLP-105 and is Technics Black in colour.

It's pre MASH (1986 seems to be the release date) has a 16 bit DAC again without oversampling.

Its a decent old unit, for $10 its a fun think to play around with.

i have a few early cd players, i always scoop them up when i see them. i have a pioneer from 1984 and i also have a technics sl-p1 from 1985. a pre mash model its silver and built like a tank. its fussy with scratched cds and wont play burn cds at all but when it dose work, it sounds really really good! it has a slide out drawer thats METAL and weighs abt 20 lbs. one cool feature i like about it is that there is a little relay inside it that every time you change tracks, it clicks. -its the only one ive ever seen that has this feature and i really like it.
