just came across an akai m8 recorder with good 10watt tube amplifier, would like to use them to make my own amplifier, but the user guide recomends the use of 10" coaxial speakers; would normal separate speakers also do the trick, is there an advantage to coaxial speakers?

normal speakers will be fine as long as they are tube friendly. co-ax speakers are neat cause its 2 or 3 drivers in one. and co-ax speakers were very popular during the tube type era.

Owwwwwwwwwwwwwww, can't believe you'd sacrifice an Akai M-8 for an amp project. There are so many old consoles out there with tube amps. That Akai needs to LIVE!!!!

the akai/roberts tube amps are popular because somebody wrote a detailed article on how to mod them for hifi standalone amp use.

in reality you just need very efficient speakers. you only have 10w to work with and that's with fresh tubes. depending on your listening habits, you may be fine with whatever you have on hand. if you like to rock out with your rooster out then the only thing that's gonna get you huge volume out of 10w is a big honkin pair of altec theater speakers with horns.

if you have access to any stereo amp with a power meter on it you can always test out your speakers using a modern amp and watch the power meters. figure out where 10w lies on the meter and give it a whirl. watts is watts no matter if its SS or tube.

yeah leave it alone, now that i think about it, those are really neat decks, shure the amps are cool, but look at the little bullshit speakers that come built in with those decks,

those amps are little piss ants alone., as a whole machine it is great, when you seprate them, u will regret it.

Hey guys, i hear you loud and clear, what i would like is good sound, and i dont even know if the M8 is any good as a recorder (i also have a 4000DS that i use), and all i know is the advice i get from the net (which can sometimes be evil), how can i ensure that i'm getting the best sound possible from the rubbish i have; i have no idea what i'm doing i will admit.

sounds to me like you need to spend more time reading around and listening to peoples systems. hopefully my next comment wont offend anyone here as i sincerely believe most of the folks here are of sound thought processes.

when you go out and listen to other peoples systems try to stay away from the guys with little telephone poles holding their cables off the ground and other esoteric nonsense. while they may have great sounding systems, chances are you can achieve musical happiness to YOUR ears for much less money than folks like that are willing to spend.

the modded akai amps can sound great but the work involved is substantial. i have a few i bought off a guy on AK that was gonna do the same and gave up. i read the tutorial online and came to the conclusion its too much work and easier to start fresh and just reuse the transformers. the iron is good though despite the tiny speakers they used in the recorders.
