WOW!!
Just when you thought you'd seen everything, this one sure escapes me. Do you have anymore info on this, was it optional 2/4 track, Japan only, black face, any reviews/ads in English publications, when was it available? It looks fabulous and definately memorable. Please don't tell us it's a single track data recorder or some such oddity.

Prototype only. Never released to general public. That's my guess.

There are a few of those around. Japan only production. 1978 or 1979.

PS: The images are from a closed auction in Japan.

Correct me if I am wrong, but how can the RS-777 be the 7" version of the RS-1506, when the RS-777 has bi-directional record and playback, and the RS-1506 does not. Plus the RS-777 does not have analog (needle type) VU/Peak meters.

Then, is the version of the RS-1700, which is bidirectional :)

There is one on ebay (might be still running) at a ridiculous price.
I am puzzled why we all (including myself) are attracted to this since for any other deck the 10.5" reel version would be prefered. For example, I'd rather have a Teac X-10R than a X-7R.
Perhaps it's rarity.
BTW, how would you like an RS-1500 with FL VU meters like that RS-777?

In the Technics, I prefer the VU meters and with some leds display... like the RS-1800 *eyepop*

EDIT: Actually it's still on sale.

I have not owned one yet, because I still have mine :)
It is not as pretty as those on this page. Some lettering is smeared because one of the prior owners did not know to NOT clean the faceplate. This type of faceplate is very sensitive. I have a SU-V4X with the same problem - I smeared some of the text off because I did not know it was so sensitive.
Mine has electrical problem:
It takes 30-60 minutes or so from turning it on until the play/record solenoid engages, capstan direction changes, so I know the button panel and the rest of the electronics are ok.
I did replace all 6 rusty front panel screws on this one. Also it came with a Sony reel 7'' metal alu the swiss cheese model with all the holes in a circle.
It is very yellowed, and three screws for side 1 are rusty but the 3 screws on side two are ok, because the reel was mounted side 1 facing outward in storage.
The remote connectors works, and I also has to replace 5 more smaller screws, 3 on the head block and two on the pinch rollers.
I am looking into sanding down the face plate and using scans from someones OK deck to make line art to laser printer to transfer some artwork using photo paper.
After that and the electrical solenoid problem I think I should add either an acrylic lid (RP-9111 now unobtanium) or a road case (did not exist, so I get free hands making up my own I guess).
A replacement dust cover is not so easy, it cover 430x355mm and sticks out about 35mm. It rest on top of the deck in two depressions in the top metal cover.

Mikkel,
The Technics decks are beginning to suffer from leaking cap disease.
You may want to go through it. Pretty easy to find, many will actually have a green growth on the legs of the caps. An ESR meter will find all the others.
My RS-1500's have succumbed as well. I have a re-cap pending.
