i trolled ebay on a whim and hit upon a blaupunkt new york german made cassette head unit and the matching 4x15w amp for $25 shipped on BIN. man that was a stroke of luck!

now i have two of these new york model radios which are amongst the last of the german made blaupunkts. i hope to get one fully working unit out of the two.

Nice! What is the big bulge on the upper right of the front? Are these decks security protected for certain cars?

that is an oddly designed up/down seek control. it has two paddles so you can feel for it without taking your eyes off the road. in the center is a slider to adjust tuner sensitivity. its great ergonomics but poor visuals!

with the blaupunkt amp, is that 15 watts max per channel or 15 watts rms per channel?

states 15w rms per channel on the amp's plate. i gutted one of these years ago and as i remember it used sanyo chips that were rated at 14wpc by sanyo spec sheet. guess even blaupunkt is guilty of rounding up.

not bad, considering thats about how much power a new HU actually puts out.

how were these older blaupunkts as far as sound quality? I know their tape mechanisms are great (when they arent stuck auto reversing or fast forwarding) but how was the rest of the system? I know they were expensive at the time (at least compared to pioneer, kenwood, clarion, most sonys etc.)
