i was just given a hi-fi, pioneer ms-6500, it's a pretty looking 70's system i guess, but is it any good or just for display; all seems to be working well and has a very nice sound, the only thing is that i do not know this tone arm as it has some kind of counter weight thingy sticking out on the left side of the arm and i don't know how to set it properly, can anyone advice me as to what kind of TT manual i should be looking for as i have tried looking for the manual for the hi-fi but i just cant find it any where, can some one point me in the ight direction? thanks *eyepop*

That'a called a "lateral weight." It will differ from arm to arm and in Pioneers is usually set to about 18-23 MM from where the shaft meets the tonearm. Set it about 2/3 of the way over and it will be fine.

If the weight is where it belongs, (limited by the plastic shaft you talk about in another area), then all is well. It is not particularly critical; the idea was to balance out mass in an s-shaped tonearm. Pioneer didn't even have an exact specification, they would always say, "about 18-23 mm," and in some arms it was not adjustable at all.
Many people remove the weight because it is thought to contribute to resonance. No strong feelings here, one way or the other.
If you really want to get tweaky, remove anti-skate and tracking force, balance the arm perfectly and see if the arm moves left or right when you move and then release it. If it does, you can try to cancel that out by moving the weight.
