taken from my copy of the MARCH 1992 issue of STEREO REVIEW. while not nearly as nice as the 1980's version featured in my signature, this is still a VERY desirable tape...

Many folks thought you'd have to be NUTS to pay $19 for a single tape in 1990.
Today, everyone would be BEGGING for a chance to be able to get one of those MA-XG's for $19 (although it should be pointed out that nineteen 1990 dollars roughly equates to about thirty 2008 dollars).
Funny how that works.

indeed. so the $20.00 of the original 1987 MA-XG was around $30.00 today?

Okay guys - for those who use both of these cassettes; which do you prefer? The single layer earlier version with hard plastic outer and metal inner elements, or the later double layer one with steel outer shell and hard plastic inner sleeves?

i'd tell you all in an instant if i only had a sample of this 1990's version. to be honest, this was the first version i was ever aware of. back when STUWEE told me he was sending me one of his, he was not specific on that, so i assumed that it was one of these late versions here, as those were the only example of the TDK MA-XG that i had yet been aware of. when he showed me exactly what i was to receive, at first i was rather disappointed because at first casual glance i thought these late models to be, more, well, "impressive" looking. it wasn't until i actually had that early version MA-XG in my hands that i had realized just how wrong i was. don't get me wrong; these late models are a fine looking tape indeed, and likely even more impressive in your deck and in the palm of your hand. (damn well better be for $30.00 a copy!!!!) if i found a deal on even one of these suckers, i'd be happy as a clam. still, to me, anyway, these late models simply aren't as desirable as the originals...

I like them both, I only have a few of the earlier "see through" version, those must be close to twenty years old by now and are performing wonderfully. No mechanical issues, drop outs as yet.
The green shelled later variety are excellent and highly desirable, hence the price they fetch. I was really fortunate a few years ago when I stumbled across a hi-fi shop selling them at £1.99 a pop. I bought 100 there and then. When I went back for some others they'd been cleaned out. The ideal length is 90 minutes although the 60 min. ones are pretty good.
Regarding cassette longevity I only demag from time to time, always rewind or fast forward the spool, intermittent head/roller cleansing and store the tapes in a moisture free environment.

Ah Ha!!! Stuart - you zapped KVJ too!! LOLs. Mind you - I only got a few - I also snapped up some Fire Series XLII and TDK AR 100 at the same time. Terrific price that was.
Tell us how your challenges with that ReVox B215 turned out in the end....

Hello Marc,
KVJ in Whitechapel Road used to be very good, maybe they still are.
I bought many TDK MA-XGNs from them but not priced at £1.99 from memory. No, my source was Harrow Audio in North London.
The Revox B215-S is an ongoing saga. The seller hasn't responded to any emails of late or upped his offer of recompense. Looks as if I'll be returning the tapedeck to him. I'm bound to find a mechanically sound example eventually.

I have just about every metal tape, super tape, and I second Stereo Review and TDK, the MA-XG 90's version is the best tape in the market hands down. Surpases the original Ma-XG, MA-R, Sony Super Matal Master, Maxell Vertex, all Denon metals, Nakamichi, That's, Pioneer, every tape in the planet. perfect tonal balance from top to bottom. I aso was able to buy some from England, Scott Land and US. And yes SSMM, Vertex is also good, but TDK MA-XG Green is in a league of it's own.
