good till 1968, well that helps answer my question on how old those tapes are. *eek* My dad bought a boat load of those back in the day and I've kinda wondered how when he purchased the majority of them. I bet I have 20+ of those Ampex 341's along with some Scotch tapes from that era.

Oh they work still, no sticky shed issues, very little oxide comming off either. The real issue for me is theres alot more drop outs in the first 5 minutes of a 341 tape then on the Scotch 215 tapes I've got. In fact, I still find rerecording on the Scotch 215's to be pretty darn good in performance at 7-1/2 ips. Both sets of tapes have been stored side by side in a home environment since my dad bought them new 40+ years ago. Basically both me and my dad are air conditioner nuts, and these tapes have tagged along with him for 20 years, and then with me the past 20 years. So for the most part the climate should have been ok where they were stored. Most all the tapes are still his recordings. Only a handful got rerecorded with either the same album(better LP or CD) or in the case of the hippy era LSD/THC induced recordings got wiped for something better. My father was and still is a character to behold lol

Just out of curiosity what kind of grade of tape was Ampex 341? I have never been able to get any spec sheets on it, and what little I found said it was related to an Irish tape formula from 1962. Another comment I read was that it was basically voice grade consumer tape.

But maybe someone else her on TH's can*praise*
I got a couple of IRISH tapes, but never had the time to run them on any of my machines yet*eyepop*
And I have had those for years*hypnot*
Have other newer formulations that I use instead of older type tapes.
I used to be able to invest at least 40 hours to this hobbie. Now I'll b lucky to invest 8 hours a week.*fit*

its truly amazing the sheer resiliance of these old RTR tapes are. as old as they are, still sound so damn good after 40+ years of god knows where they were stored, what was recorded on them etc etc.
