I am just getting into SACDs late in life, so I was wondering which SACDs out there are 'must haves' in your opinion. (I am listening in traditional stereo only; I have no 5.1 setup.)
So far, I have:
Art Pepper: Gettin' Together
Heifetz Concertos (Living Stereo)
On order is Pink Floyd's DSOTM and Tavener: Towards Silence

I make no distinction between DVDa and SACD. DOSTM and Brothers in Arms are good, but so is Hotel CA, A Night at the Opera, and Rumours.
Problem is that at least for me, most of the stuff I like (classic rock) is on DVDa.
Oh, and the recent Rush release (Moving Pictures) is also pretty good.
Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" will be released in 5.1 in another month or two, but I don't know what format.

It will be available in CD for sure, plus SACD for special order from only one audio site online.

Hi Skeet- the Sony will most likely be delivered tomorrow. That is assuming the duty on it is paid. If not I'll have to pick it up at the post office on Thursday. Look forward to using it.

I read before that it would be released on SACD but I never saw anything about it being a 5.1 channel mix. I hope it will be...

Yeah. this is a truly GREAT version. I just got this CD about two months ago and it is outstanding. Both of these (Tumbleweed, Madman) are my favorite EJ albums, and to get another wonderful version of 'Madman' was a real treat. The playing on this reminds me of the looseness and verve of 11-17-70.

Depending on your SACD player, if you are listening in stereo only, you are probably getting a glorified CD version. The stereo layer on the hybrid disc has been downsampled and is probably not in its native format. You're getting PCM. SACD is much better!
I run the analogue output cables from my Pioneer universal player directly into my Peavey multi-track mixer. The player is set to 5.1. (You're getting only 3 chanels on those Living Stereo discs, because 2 or 3 channels was all they had back then.) Then I mix the signal down to stereo in the analogue domain, preserving all the high-rez musical information that is otherwise lost when you let the player do it. (Failure to mix down all 3 channels means that I'd lose the center channel. That's why I use the mixer.) The mixer's stereo outputs go right into my amp.
If you play a stereo-only Living Stereo disc (such as Ravels Daphnis & Chloe), you might want to set your player to 5.1 anyway. (Again, even at 5.1, you'll get only 2 channels because that's all that was recorded). If you compare the 5.1 version to the stereo-only version, I bet you'll notice a lot more detail! The multi-track version isn't downsampled.
I love those RCA Victor Living Stereo discs. They're better than other SACD recorded music that began life digitally. Amazing what they could do in 1958 with a tape running at 15 (or occasionally) 30 ips!
Try the Saint-SAens Organ symphony disc with Charles Munch. Amazing!

The Dark Side of the Moon disc was encoded in DSD, not PCM. They may of down converted it to PCM for the 5.1 mix and back to DSD, but the 2 channel layer is DSD all the way from what I've read.

Thanks for the tips; I wil try to get more Living Stereo SACDs; they are quite affordable on Amazon and eBay. *bigthumbup*

Hi,
I can confirm that DSOTM,the 30th Anniverary Edition (SACD) is a stereo and 5.1 mix.
It reads-
Hybrid SACD plays in stereo on CD players and in 5.1 surround sound and stereo on all SACD and compatible players

I just bought a car (Acura RL) that will play DVD-Audio disks. Is SACD another name for the the same thing, or is this blu-ray vs. HD DVD all over again?
I've only been looking at DVDa format to have a good sampling of music I like, but in the better format...
So far, I'm enjoying a Rob Thomas DVD/CD that I bought for my wife at a garage sale for $1. My wife informed me of that after I made the comment about the new discs, that she had noticed the CD I bought her said DVD on the flipside... :) It turns out, that disk has the normal CD burned on one side, and you can flip it over and play via DVDa on the other. Great for comparisons! And let me tell you... you can hear a definite difference!
I just purchased (but still waiting on) the following DVD-A's
1) Hall & Oates Live, 2 disc set (I figure there's no way this can be anything but great!)
2) Medeski, Martin & Wood: Uninvisible (Seen them live, awesome jam band!)
3) DJ Haul & Mason: Cell Eight (electronica artists/DJs that I've never heard of, but it was inexpensive, DVDa, and electronica.... so I'm really curious)
I would like to get DSOTM on DVD-A, and maybe a handfull of other worthy recordings. But, to be honest, my stereo CDs are doing the trick pretty good, too. That RL stereo is amazing... 10 speakers, and they all contribute. :)

Yup, it is bluray vs HD DVD all over! The two formats are not the same and if you try to play a sacd in your car, won't work. SACD also have a layer that will play on cd player, dvda also has a layer that will play on dvd player (think dolby 5.1).
Good news is that sacd is dead, dvda is still barely alive.Rush released Moving pictures in dvda last spring, the upcoming Pink Floyd album will be the first rock 5.1 released in years (that I am aware of). There is a lot of good stuff in dvda. Some recordings can still be obtain at good prices, like Peter Gabriels "Up".

It seems it is still alive & well in the classical realm, though. The San Francisco Symphony has released a 17-CD (Hybrid SACD) Mahler box set: http://tinyurl.com/3w4zpoh

SACD is still having new releases- just not a big amount of them. Im aware a lot of the SACD pressing plants have closed and there is only 1 or 2 left. SACD is more alive then DVD-A which is practically dead for all intents and purposes.
On another note- I picked up my Sony XA 5400 SACD player today. I'll be unpacking it soon.

Rush released Moving Pictures on dvda a few months ago. They will eventually be releasing more, all in dvda.
There are some re-releases being done on DVDa, from japan, like Hotel CA and Rumours might be available now.
Genesis released their whole collection last year on DVDA as did the Doors.
