Demagnetizeing an 8 track player

Hello,
I would like to demagnetize my 8 track player tape head but the demagnetizer is too fat to fit all the way through the door of the player. It is the pretty standard demagnetizer with the fat black handle and a red rubber tip. I can get the demagnetizer about three fourths of an inch away from the head. Is this close enough to work, or do I have to go on ebay and purchase a thin demagnetizer that can get up closer to the head. Any input is always appreciated.

Remove the case and come in from the side or the top,you should be able to make better access to the head then.While you've got the case off,do some cleaning while your in there with a can of compressed air and you can usually clean the capstan shaft easy,along with the heads and track change sensor.Always unplug the deck when you have the case off.I have both styles of demagnetizers,the cartridge version and one with a longer than usual shaft for use in 8-track decks.
