Check out this thread (link below) where I mention having trouble with my 706. Someone posted a link to a site that has what you are looking for I believe.

http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=14263

My 706 is having repeated problems with overheating of the motor and it appears it will have to be set aside until I can find a replacement motor. They are nice decks though and I hope I can get mine going some time in the future.

I looked for a source for the service manual instead of the prelim and haven't found one yet. The only thing I can say is keep looking on ebay, one may pop up some time.

Right now I am looking for a replacement motor for my 706. It plays but the motor keeps overheating and this is going to lead to it's demise. I found that partstore.com has mention of one with a very close part number to mine (none in stock right now). So I am going to check with my tech to see if he thinks it will work. Cost is kind of steep but it would be worth it to go on and get this deck going fully.

I've seen partstore mentioned on this site. What is the general impression, good and reliable I hope. *hope*

Correction about the service manual. Just found this on the bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-Akai-Service-Repair-Manual-GXC-706D-Cassette-Tape-Deck-Original-/380367950118?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item588fb25126
I think that is the service manual and not the prelim.
