MX5050 buttons

My B2-2 is missing it's Record button. The red plastic "cap" that you press to record. I have a "donor" deck with all it's buttons. How do I get the button off? My manual shows the exploded view of the Control Switch Assembly with noe meantion of how the "knobs" are released from the swithches.

I tried pulling straight out with smooth plyers. *no*

I have a similar situation, and I am told that the buttons for that line of decks are glued on and cannot be removed. In my case, a few of them just popped off, but others won't come free.
