I have two decks one is a JVC TD-V711 that i use nothing but TDK tapes in and the second is a Yamaha K1200 that gets nothing but Maxell.I use these two decks pretty much 50/50 and i have noticed that the Yamaha's heads pinch rollers and capstans have to be cleaned more than twice as often as the JVC that see's only TDK.Has anyone else noticed Maxell tape's dirtying things up more often than TDK?I use mostly Maxell XLII and XLII-S in the Yammy and TDK SA and SA-X in the JVC.

It could be because Maxell uses a head-cleaning tape leader.

Wouldn't that be backwards? With a head cleaning leader they should have cleaner heads? Are both sets of tapes the same relative age and storage conditions?

Are the Maxell tapes of the newer variety? Perhaps they're shedding?

Both are from the same era 1991-92 XLII-S and SA-X.

Yeah, you're right; I misread the question.

I must say, that is the first time I have seen that question!! I find that these types of tapes shed so little that it has never even crossed my mind if there is a variation. Older tapes, especially 70s pre-recorded ones often leave a trail of amber oxide.....

There might be other reasons though - look to the decks themselves - little things like capstan shafts getting a bit abrasive, or perhaps one is knurled and the other isn't.

Cheers - MH
