OK Tapenuts,
Show us ya rack. I have badly run out of space to put shit on since I got back into tape. It's all you guys fault, so give us some help here. For f**k sakes I've got my CD player and power supply for the pre sitting on one subwoofer (rubber tube isolated but still not good) and 3 tape decks stacked one on top of the other on the other subbie (rubber tube isolated but still not good). I have a few ideas for racks but if there are any good suggestions please let me see them?

Custom is the best way to go if you can afford to get it done. I saved money by buying my own 4x8' sheets of plywood, getting the shop to cut and assemble it, and then I will stain it myself. I will be posting pictures of my new rack (I just got custom made up) late next week when its done. I have another post if you guys can help me chose a wood stain for it. I had to bite the bullet and get a new rack made since my old one is 15 years old, getting beat on, and just doesn't fit all that I have to put into it now. I feel your pain. My new rack has around 12 shelves to put it all in. 45x44 inches wide and tall. I'll have pics ready to go of it all soon.

Here is my system. This picture is a few months old, but my setup is still completely unchanged from when this picture was taken.

http://x-2000r.angelcities.com/images/tapestuff/Des_Lab_TLS_Bright.JPG

Anyway, I use a combination setup of pro rack mounts. The center rack (actually two half-racks, one bolted atop the second) houses the X-2000R reel to reel, the lightbar, the Denon DN-790R and DN-720R cassette decks as well as the DN-C615 single well CD player and the EQ sitting on top. The second [half] rack holds the mixer with the twin Gemini CDJ-15X CD players sitting on the bottom.

The balance of the system uses a couple of rather simplistic generic 'stands'.

I chose this setup to be as compact as possible. But one of these days I plan to completely take it apart and rebuild it again, probably using two full height racks. My main concern is the ergonomics and awkward position of having the twin CD players and cassette decks so close to the ground. Plus, I have no idea how I'd position the reel to reels and not have the thing be topheavy and unstable. As it is, The Teac is at midheight and even being braced and bolted to both the wall and the rack from behind, I'm still concerned about what might happen if we get another strong eqarthquake.

Another dilemma is where I am going to put the turntable if and when I finally get it. Again, this will probably require a complete rebuild of the system with one or two incumbent components probably truncated from the setup entirely.

I use Solidtech as follows:

I have two of these with 7 shelfs:

I have one of these with three shelfs:

The wood finish is the lowest and to the right side:

I use Disc of Silence under alle mechanical movements:

I have Radius Isolation under the two top shelfs on the solo racks:

All the racks have adjustable spikes as feets.

The hights between each shelf is adjustable by interchangable distant metal tubes.

Shelf are big enough for any equipment possible and can take more than 360lbs.

Great stuff you have for life.

For my records I use Porsa System professional inventory like the attached thumbnails:

Nice racks Dolph. I always wondered where stereo shops get these from. The price alone is why I ended up using wood at a custom fab. It won't filter out the resonances as well, but the look is still nice. The thing I like about the open racks like yours is they have excellent breathing for the components, plus they help show off the wood side panels on some decks.

Here's my racks I made with the help of a friend this year. Three separate ones that I designed and my friend made sure were strong enough for the gear. Fairly simple but functional for me and holds all I need.

Thanks guys some good ideas there. Love your racks Dolph but I bet they cost. Another thing I should have mentioned is that I have a sprung timber floor. I need to get some isolation as I intend to have three TT's mounted on the top shelves. It looks like most of you guys have concrete slab floors. Am I correct in saying this?. I really need some mass in the rack and it needs to straddle the two subwoofers without their energy affecting the shelves above too much. Any more thoughts/suggestions appreciated
Cheers
G

I will not recommend to have TT's on racks.

I forgot to tell in my last post, that my TT is standing on Disc of Silence on a fully adjustabel and tarmac/foam damped Target dedicated shelf which is boltet to a brick wall.
This shelf is hung above my racks.

TT's are best left on shelves bolted to brick walls.

Me too. I wanted a rack where all the wires were invisible, so I needed one with back panel.

Finally, here is my solution (pictures taken two years ago):

There were "a pair" of wires to hide from video sources to AV receiver. (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc46/thereeler/rack1.jpg)

The rack before mounting it (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc46/thereeler/rack2.jpg)

Mounting and measuring shelves high (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc46/thereeler/rack3.jpg)

The wires must pass for some site! (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc46/thereeler/rack4.jpg)

More shelves (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc46/thereeler/rack5.jpg)

Passing some wires (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc46/thereeler/rack6.jpg)

Final result. All wires hidden. (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc46/thereeler/rack7.jpg)

Agreed. A wall shelf would be best but in my situation this is not practical without major modifications to the house structure. It would be cheaper to put in a concrete pillar into bedrock and mount the table on top. But even this solution takes ou room I don't have. Unfortunatley my music room is fairly small so the TT's have to go on top of the rack.

I *SHOULD* be getting one of these later in the week:

I have 2 of the smallers ones for my vinyl, and they work great!
