I was asked by a fellow church member to record his small band practise which was today. I've done this before for him, though that was a couple years ago. Anyway I didn't want to bring my mixer along, so I got out my recently service Aiwa S9000 deck which has a built in mike preamp of decent quality. I only have a set of cheap $100 microphones for now, so those came along. A set of Audio Technica 818II mikes. They are only meant for close up voice, so using them in a live setting they are not at their best. My headphones were no good at shielding out the external sound, so I wasn't able to get a very good idea of how the sound will be. I put the mikes on stands and set them 7 to 10 feet from the players. They used amps to play their guitars and piano through. Anyway did a recording and on playback it looks like my mikes were way too far from the subjects. It sounds like I was forever far away from them all. My mikes don't pick up sound too great since they are dynamic mikes. The stereo effect wasn't really there either, as it might as well been in mono. I have one more chance to record another practise in a weeks time, so I will try once more. I wish I had better mikes. A set of condensor small diagram would have been best for this. Deck recorded fine, though dynamics weren't there. The sound seemed compressed. I can't say if the deck or the mikes were doing that. Anyway I might try and put up a MP3 file for you guys to listen to for fun to see what Im getting at.

My goal down the road is to get a set of Audio Technica AT4040 tube mikes with a MR1000 hard drive recorder and will use the preouts on that to go to a deck.

Anyone else do live recording?

I tried to use the link to my website for the MP3, but it didn't work. So Youtube is as good as it gets.
