I'm working on separating separating the audio components out from the home cinema, and setting up something dedicated for listening. I've read through the discussions here, and most seem to suggest that something like a VSX-D1s / VSX-95 / VSX-9500 would suit my needs (I'm wanting something from around this era to match the other components). The trouble has been finding one!

I might be able to get my hands on a VSX-501, which looks very similar to the D1s - minus some of the bells and whistles. I'm having some trouble finding any info on it. On the back, it says that it sucks 610w of juice, which impressed me. The speaker connections, not so much.

Does anyone have other recommendations, or know anything about the 501?

Thanks

Those are all Pioneer receivers with A/V switching so they will remind you of the HT setup you are trying to separate from. IIRC, all of those Pioneers are rated around 120 wpc. The amps are the toroidal powered, non-switching design that first appeared in the SX-3900. Very nice sounding unit but the 120 watts will hold you back on speaker choice.

How about going a little further and looking at Elite separates from that time?

Yes, the M-90 or M-91 set is a good one. Elite-ist has a set and I think there are photos in the gallery.
