Anyone here a fan of the shows or movies? Loved it since I was a kid and grew up watching the original series. Star Trek II was a big hit for me. Saw every movie as well and since Star Trek V- tried to go on openning day for most of them since then. Only missed 6 on openning day. Had a weird time seeing the premiere of Star Trek Insurection. There was a movie projectionist strike at the time and the first theater we went to, the projectionist took the film apart so it couldn't be viewed. Then went to a second theater and they put the film in reversed. Went to a theater in the next room and finally saw it. Was all a bunch of laughs that day.

Looking forward to the new movie coming out next May. Lots of hype on it so far, but very little info on it other then its from the first series when Kirk and Spock met and were in the Academy. Look forward to openning day on that film.

I used to be a big fan of the original show but have drifted away from it over the years. It's cool that there is going to be a new movie, my wife and I will definitely go and check it out.

I'm not a Trekkie, but like the original series. Out local CBS affiliate used to show them at 11:05 every Sat & Sun night, until this last weekend. Now they show "Friends" and one of the CSI shows, like those shows aren't on several other stations everyday.

Luckily, you can watch the original Star Trek episodes for free on the CBS website:

Thanks for that link. The original series hasn't been available here on my dish for a long time. It's probably been 4 or 5 years since I've seen an episode.

I liked the original series the most. Next Gen was ok, but didn't keep up with it. I unlike many actually liked Voyager (especially 7 of 9 meow), but watched maybe 1 or 2 seasons of Enterprise. Never liked DS9. Favorite movie has got to be Star Trek II, then 4, then 3, then 6, then Generations, then First Contact. The rest I can do without. Star Trek V to me only got going near the end, and then it finally was over once I started to get into it. I do admit the part where they were travelling near the center of the galaxy left me with a feeling of awe, but that quickly dissapated.

I also loved the series, and ST:TNG but was not a VOYAGER (except for 7of9, hubba hubba!) or DS9 fan and the latest series just kind of fell flat. I've also caught all the movies and will also see this one. Excited!

my mother is a diehard trekkie, andi grew up with the next generation series. i saw the whole series in it's first airing, from the pilot in 1987, to the series finale in 1994. always been, and still am a mild trekkie myself; i have the original cast movies on laserdisc (the best way to have them, IMO) and they are my favorites. i seem to be just about the only person on this planet that has found the first movie to be wholly fascinating and engrossing, while most everyone, right from the original theatrical release in 1979, thought the movie a colossal yawnfest. anyway, i am most certainly a trekkie, and if you can't guess what my favorite starship is, than i'll just show you:

damn, i love that ship, every thing about it's design has given me goosebumps since childhood!!o-o:-) i had a very nice model that me and my ex-father did up 15 years back, but, being the destructive child that i was, i eventually destroyed it. fortunately, later on down the road i got this toy replica and did a detailing job on it:

Just got back from seeing it too. Worth checking out. It didn't have that taylored quality the older ones had though. This one reminded me of kids in space. It had a kind of klunky quality to it. I'll have to watch it again to be sure it wasn't just the first viewing or if it will get better the second time. Lots of humour. Im not sure the acting was top notch though.

OK, here's my read on the new flick.

Just got back from seeing it with my family and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Having seen the most recent previews (not the early and darkly shrouded Abram's style viral stuff from last year...) and some short interviews with the cast, I wasn't impressed and somewhat skeptical. But holding Abrams in high esteem for his creative endeavors on Fringe, Lost and Cloverfield - it was the witnessing of his creative application to this particular project that compelled me to GO.

For an introductory swag at bringing a franchise back into modern relevance, I think the movie works and it went way beyond the typical "pilot feel" of such franchise revivals. The acting was much better than I anticipated, for prior reasons I've stated and for reviews from friends and bloggers I read in advance. Considering the wholesale application of fresh acting talent thrown at this project, I left feeling like they pulled it off well. The subtle nuances of each character varied but the key ones were pretty well executed IMHO.

Special effects were certainly good by modern day standards, and although character development was pinnacle to this endeavor, I don't believe the storyline suffered any significant amount. Entertaining it was, holding to the essence of the original Star Trek feel was more than modestly achieved and I left wanting to see it again - if only to pay more attention to the smaller things I know I missed. One thing this movie does do is exude several notches higher of "fast" compared to any prior Star Trek related theatrical release - not excessively - just at a faster clip than anything before. Having said that - the pacing of this film is one of it's strong points.

Last note, it's been quite a while since I've seen a movie where a rousing applause ensued when the credits started to roll...and it's also important to note that the crowd was evenly balanced with young and old alike.

I recommend this flick...

Movie was better a second viewing. Flowed better then I remembered the first time. I still like Shatner's more reserved Kirk, but I could get used to Pine.

The only sad part was that wasn't how Kirk took over from CAPT Christopher Pike in the original James Blish books. Maybe that storyline wasn't exciting enough, but you hate when they deviate from the line. On the other hand, I loved the young Sulu and Chekov. I never recall Spock having wood for Uhuru. And a few other details like Scotty gets found in exile on some ice planet (like me, in AK) and steps onboard and becomes Chief Engineer? What happened to the entire Engineering staff chain between the unseen original Engineer Officer and his Department or Division Officers. They ALL disappeared? Nit picking I know, but still ....

Yah the are holes in the movie for sure, but over all its fun to watch. I don't think its the best Star Trek movie ever made, but its definately up there. Its getting to the point it will beat the revenue Star Trek 1 made (with inflation factored in) which was the highest grossing Star Trek movie (again adjusted for inflation).

I saw it a 5th time with my sister last Saturday. Im determined to match or beat my record of the other Star Trek movie I saw 7 times- #4. I haven't watched a movie this many times in theaters since 1986, even at 5.
