Well after several attempts to get a 3BX off ebay and getting beat in the last seconds many times I finally scored on a DBX-3BX ll. I was going to install it on the DBX 200 and use it just for tape like we did back in the 80s. Now I read that a lot of folks are using them for LPs, CDs, and WMA and Ipod expansion. So should I install it on the DBX 200 and use it just for tape or should I install it pre or post EQ in the Pre out Main in and have it process “all” sources ? opinions and suggestions welcome. *reelspin*

Hi J B S,
I use the dbx 400 program route selector, and patch in the additional processors through the router. If you have the room, it would be fine to tie in the 3BX into the dbx 200. Alot less complicated, and that way your not affecting the signal in any way in "bypass" mode, while connected through the pre outs. But, in your case you want to expand all sources. Why not try it as you suggest, and reconfigure the wiring, later, if you aren't happy. What is nice, while recording sources through the dbx router onto tape you can alter the signal there.

I have used a dbx-3bx for many years in my main system. I use it on every source that I play!
There is a lot of talk from some about how you don't need one with CDs. Well that is a lot of malarkey! I find that you will hear the effects on CDs just as much as any other source.
It is my experience that the dbx-3bx is most noticeable with percussion and other instruments that have a fast "attack time", such as struck and plucked instruments. It must be used judiciously, but will reward you if used properly.
I have a first generation 3bx and mine is inserted into a tape loop, but I use it practically all the time. I would expect that you might get better results switched into a tape loop via the dbx200. If it is inserted between the pre and power amp, you will need to adjust it much more, as the signal level varies so greatly as you adjust the volume. If it is in a tape loop, the signal level is much more stable.
Let us know how you like it! Be sure to give it a whirl on one of your favorite songs with some good percussion. *yes*

Ended up installing it in Processor 2 location on the DBX 200. Running it at 25 percent right now and it sounds about right. I have the transition level about centered. Output level sounds about the same volume when switching the unit in and out of the circuit. It sure is helping out these 30 plus year old party tapes ( Maxell UD 35-180 ) on the reel to reel.

Hi J B S,
I have room on my dbx 400 to patch in one more processor. It might just be the 3BX. Are you usng it for recording, too? I know some of my old pre-recorded cassettes, especially, need help on playback.

I have not made any recordings yet. I have it in "Post" mode now. *bigthumbup*
I have a new "toy" due next week that will be in Deck 2 spot on the DBX 200. Then I will be able to play my good cassetts again. It will give the 3BX ll a real test.

Hi J B S,
You will be introducing us to your new cassette deck, once it arrives? It sounds interesting. Yesterday, I did patch in my 3bx into my dbx 400 router. It's nice to have the flexibilty of using all four of my sound processors, now. The 3BX sure does a good job of improving the dynamics of some older recordings.

Yes, all is still top secret. I will post un-boxing photos and the photos of it in the stack. That may be a couple days. I have to rebuild the cabinet. Went to town this morning and got some new aluminum angle.

Hi J B S,
Not even a hint of what it might be? Black face, silver, or other? I'm guessing silver.

Sorry to butt in, but how's the 3BX sound?
I've got a 4BX, and I think it sounds awful, all it seems to do is suck the low end out and punch up the mids.
I'm about ready to sell it.
How is the bass on the 3BX?

It is working great, I have some experience with the DBX 3BX from way back around 1980. I am currently running about 25 percent for tape. It does restore the depth and width of the music. Bass sounds perfect. I am not currently using it for anything other than tape. Before I even plugged the unit in I opened it and inspected all Caps and cleaned all switches and RCA plugs with DeoxIT.

Hi J B S,
Have you been saving up for awhile to find this particular deck? Looking forward to the big reveal, later.
Just a question regarding the use of your dbx 3BX: although it works well with cassettes, I'm finding on playback of particular recordings of open reel tape with my Pioneer RT-909, it adversely affects the sound when the 3BX is engaged in "post." The recording is on TDK Audua tape copied from Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" vinyl. The mids and highs are over emphasized to the point of becoming shrill, without much gain in the low frequencies. This is at the 1.2 Expansion level and less than mid point of the Transition level. Open reel tape doesn't need the same help that some cassettes do.

The tape is Maxell UD recorded over 30 years ago on a Dokorder 1120. I am listening to the tapes now on the same machine ( avatar ).
