I bought a sealed box of these for $7.00 online from some store that sells the contents of abandoned storage bins. Yep, someone left these tapes behind; didn't want them. Their loss is my gain.
The tape is a type II high bias cassette from the mid-late 80's. This was towards the end of the era when tape manufacturers still all had shells that all looked alike, i.e. a black case with a wrap-around label. This Scotch is no different. It has a shiny silver wrap-around label saying what the tape is, but the portion you label is the self-adhesive type, like most tapes have been now for years. No problems with the playback, FF, or RW on this tape; it's pretty well built. I had a problem with the 90's version of this tape. It squealed like a pig when I'd FF or RW it, but not this version; it's built pretty solid
The CD I decided to record was Dusty Springfield's 1969 album "Dusty In Memphis". I like the Memphis Sound, so with the bass, strings, & horns, I figured it would be a good CD to try out, plus I hadn't listened to it in quite a while.
I recorded the cassette on my NAD 613 deck using Dolby C. Well, we have another winner. My NAD really likes this tape. A very good, rich sound, nice bass, clear highs, no distortion. In other words, a very good tape.; horns were especially good sounding. Like most type II tapes I've tried lately, I could find no flaw with this tape. It's another example of how good analog cassettes can sound.
Getting a box of these Scotch XS II for only $7.00 is one of those once-in-a-lifetime deals. I seriously doubt I'll ever find another deal like that again.
