Sony's answer to JVC's S-VHS decks in the late 80s. This Sony deck came out in around 1988. Sony joked to JVC- "Anything you can do, we can do Beta". This format used metal particle tapes and produced over 500+ lines of analog video. Mix that with HiFi sound and you've got a nice source to watch. Its been said that professionals didn't like how this format performed better then their Betacam SP video, so they tried to have it killed. And it seemed it worked because ED Beta decks didn't last long on the market. But if anyone gets one of these decks (to play old beta tapes for example), then you can buy current market Betacam SP 30 minute tapes to get the same tape type as the ED Beta tapes. Both used the same metal particle tape inside.

"Anything you can do, we can do Beta" heh, that was pretty clever of SONY, actually. i am quite fimiliar with this model, me being a closet BETA enthusiast and all. SONY claimed that ED BETA had over 500 lines of resolution, even better than DVD!! like many SONY products, WAY ahead of it's time. anyway, the only BETA VCR i have is a monophonic 1984 SL-2300, and i have been on the beat for a while now for one of several models to replace it with. my prime choices being;

SONY-SL-HF750
PIONEER VX-90
SONY SL-HF900
SONY SL-3030
SONY SL-HF600
SONY SL-HF500
SONY SL-HF400

an SL-2300, just like mine. part of the 1984 "EZ-BETA" series, it is actually VERY heavy and well made. excellent picture quality, it's only real strikes are it's wired remote and mono sound. it was available in silver,black,red, and blue...

Yah I like Beta too. My very first blank video tape I got was a Beta. From around 1983. Have a dozen tapes which I never got rid of. Im on the lookout for the EDV 9500 as I need it for my business stereo system. Its a great unit from what I gather.

Well I'll mention in the early 80s we used to rent VCRs now and then to watch movies. While the vcr was at home I'd tape some extra stuff from tv. The first tape was made at my brothers friends place for me. It was of a shuttle launch. Anyway we finally got our own vcr (VHS) in 1985. I was given in around 1990 a used Beta vcr which I still have, but the belts are gone on it now. I used it only briefly since it was old to begin with. The sound warbled and it wouldn't rewind tapes very well. It still works today, but its hardly a good deck to make recordings from.

Oh and Ayeka- If you are looking to get another Beta deck- stick with Sony. You can still get some parts for them and Sony produced the best decks to begin with.

the PIONEER VX-90 is a SONY OEM clone of the SL-HF900...
