View Full Version : Are Ya Musical?

Going along with my love of music, and musical reproduction is a common item that usually people interested in music often play some musical instrument. I don't. Man, I do a mean air guitar, and I actually own a Fender Precision bass and bass amp (along with about 3 VHS tape and 2 books on learn-to-do-it-yourself). But I haven't learned to do it myself. I've tried, but this isn't the kind of thing I can sit down and self-instruct.
Anyone here play a musical instrument? In a band? Was in a band?

Well I am certainly no professional, but I do love my audio and my electronic music. For when I feel a bit inspired, here are my instruments:

Playing the acoustic guitar is where my screen name came from. I did play in garage bands in the late 60's and in the 70's I realized that electric wasn't my forte. I did a duo and after auditioning for a band (that I didn't get in) I picked up some studio rhythm acoustic guitar work (my forte).... right up 'till disco hit in the late '70's. Since then it's been mainly playing for the walls. I did put together this cassette portastudio together about 7 years ago... drum machine, effects and got an Epi Les Paul Special (it's basically a pos) to fill in some gaps in the songs. I am a proud Martin D15 owner, that's my baby!

When the Pony Express arrives at Scorpion8's house, he'll get to hear some of my latest and best high-quality-garbage. <g> I spent enough time over the summer experimenting with recording techniques (and posting threads here!), so I'm always interested to hear what other people have to say about my music.
I have a Roland digital grand piano, an older Roland e-series 61-key manual synth, a REAL old Lowrey (pre-MIDI) with some great analogue string sounds (reminicent of the Triumvirat Spartacus album), and my most recent acquisition: The Casio WK 3700. It has all the Hammond organ sounds on it with a synth module and a DSP so that I can create and tweak the sounds the way I want them, or make my own. The only thing I don't like about the Casio is the cabinet, but I don't tour or anything, so it just stays on top of the digital piano. It has a disc drive for the acquisition of even more stuff off of the Casio web site, but I can't seem to get anything from that web site to work. I can MIDI everything together with a MIDI thru box for a lot of polyphony, so I actually don't need the extra stuff on the web site. I also have several Yamaha tone generators that I use occasionally. (One does microtunings.)
For me the Hammond C3 is the coolest keyboard ever, but I don't have one. The digital keyboards have all the sounds on them, but I want a Hammond for the sake of having one. They weigh 450 lbs and take up a lot of space and are expensive, even today. I'm waiting for some power-of-attorney who wants to get rid of one during an estate liquidation--then maybe I can pick up one cheaply. Except for gospel music, Hammonds aren't much good for anything by themselves, though.
So: Anyone know where I can get one?

I got into music the cheap way; the way my mother tells it. I went to a wedding at age four, came home, went over to my grandmother's piano and began to play the Wedding March. Lessons began shortly after with a sweet white-haired lady who had way too much patience with me.
I used to hear the band rehearsing in junior high and I sought out the director and told him I played the drums; I lied but the piano training was enough that I could read better than the other drummers and along with lots of enthusiasm I did pretty well.
A purchase of a $12.00 Stella guitar started me in the early rock and roll era and I put together a band and made one demo record and lots of gigs.
Went to college on a piano/percussion scholarship and formed a folk trio and took advantage of the sixties folk craze, made two more records and lots of gigs and money to work my way through.
After graduating with a double major in Music and English , I ended up spending the next thirty years as a band director and, in the evenings, I led my own trio at a private club.
Went on way too long but I have loved music and been surrounded by it and the electronics for all of my life. Thanks for suffering me to run on!!

Hmmmmm
I wonder if my post in this thread disappeared?
Earlier today I wrote that I play the Trumpet, the Guitar and the Piano.
Trumpet being my main instrument.
I don't perform commercial, just for fun.
I dream of the Monette Prana Anja

More modestly I also dream about the Zeus Olympus ZTR 1000 ARL

I have studio equipment to record myself, or other people I might play with, here with 12 band (16 subchannels) mixer and digital studio processing, Microphones, Mic preamps and whatever's needed.

i don't know if i am musical or anything, but i always have enjoyed dinkin' around with synthesizer keyboards. used to have a gay 'ol time with the CASIOs in the stores as a kid. to this day, i'm on the beat for one of those mid/late '80s CASIO models with the RAM CARD system that i remember so well. missed a chance to pick one up along with a card at a yard sale for $15.00. an ideal example, no less!! i've kicked myself since...

I sure try to be or maybe rather threaten to be musical :)
I play a little bit of guitar and/or drums but am usually to lazy to practice. I got into the collecting vintage guitar and amps thang for a number of years but was cured by the collecting vintage audio thang.
I went to C.R.A.S. for audio recording and did an internship at a studio in Seattle several years ago. I also spent three years managing a little music store here in town. Right now I work for a large musical instrument and accessories dealer that is about to go out of business unfortunately.
I have a good friend that used to have a shop here in town dedicated to making those old Stellas, Silvertones, Harmony's....play as good or better than the big name brands.
Speaking of Alvarez Yari, one of the acoustic guitars that I can't seem to part with is a beautiful 1976 Alvarez Yari DY-74.

It's a real shame my friend Mike no longer has his shop. You may be able to find archives of his website. Do a search for Delta Strings in St. Louis.
Mike would make that old Silvertone your favorite guitar. Normal stuff done would be to refret and flatten out the fingerboard. Neck reset would be done if need be. After that those old guitars play as good or better than Gibsons, Fenders......and look cooler :D
Mike's old student is the guy that has been building Santana and others newer acoustics and acoustic jazz boxes.
Here is a cool article on Mike and his love of old blues and the instruments used to make those early recordings.

Those Kleenex box pick ups are very sweet. I have one I'd like to put on a semi hollow Tele sometime.
The Kay Barney Kessel Pro is a guitar that's always been high on my list. Believe it or not the Kays far out play the Gibson of the same name.

Hi, Scorpion, and All,
I play baritone horn and trombone, and I am a middle school band director. I've taught for 22 years, and I still enjoy working with young people.
My students routinely hear lots of tapes of classical and jazz music!

Hello to a fellow band director. To FF and Rex: Funny you mention the Barney Kessel Kay; I left that one out. Following the Stella came a black BKK with silver sparkle pickguard. That was the one that got me through my rock and roll years.

I think some folks call that "speedbump" a "Lipstick" also if we're on the same page :-)<- How bout the sweet sounding old "mustache" pickups that the good Rockets had on em?
no1maestro, very cool that you had the Kessel. I wish you still had it as I'd love to have a look at it.
Nothing beats that full Kelvinator headstock on the Kessel Pro. I used to have an old Kay Jazz II w/ full Kelvinator and a Bigsby.
IIRC didn't Kessel prefer the Kay to the Gibson or did Gibson just piss him off? Didn't he pull his name from the Gibson and put it back on the Kay?

I am from what would be regarded as a musical family. My dad's parents both could play piano or organ (Grandpa even did silent movie accompaniment at one time), my mom could harmonise and work out music on a piano, my dad was a jazz musician who played four instruments (tenor sax, flute, clarinet, alto sax).
On rare occasions I have been accused of having musical ability as well (due to various things I've had to do to salvage tracks in studio once in a while), though I don't think I do. I tried playing clarinet briefly in 5th grade but I never had the enthusiasm for it Dad did, much less any belief in my ability on it (and Dad thought I had potential).
As for Dad, and what he sounded like, here's a recording I made in October 1982 of a big band, just under 4 months before he died. Dad plays the sax solo, which begins at 1.00 into this track:
