here is what i have heard to be considered one of the top five nak decks of all time. feel free to correct me if i have been malinformed in that assertation. i happen to think it to look rather attractive, for a Nak, anyway...

Since you posted the specs on my CR-5, since they share the same manual... the CR-5 goes for usually 1/4th the price of a CR-7. Here's a pic of her with a CR-2A.

I wonder why Nakamichi chose to make the bias/rec level adjustments automatic on this deck and I wonder why they chose to put auto reverse into the dragon.

Both descisions compromising the quality of these decks.

Is anybody making a ZX9 thread?
I think ZX9 would be my choise for a Nak deck if.......................

Dolph.. what do you think about the CR-5? It has manual adjustments and no auto reverse.

I'm not Dolph, but IMHO it's a killer deck and a "best value" item. It flat out kicks butt for the money and is a no nonsense product. Can you tell that I like it? If I wanted a "highend Nak" on the cheap, I would go with a CR5 and put the rest of the money into buying premium tapes.

Dolph,
Check out http://www.naks.com/
You can see the years. The 1982-1985 ZX-9 is a simple machine in that all calibrations are manual, you can contriol the azimuth of the record head, level control etc with equip with direct drive. Nakamichi in California chosed this machine to make their Tapes that tells you something. Great machine reliable simple in that nothing is auto. Finally an economical machine compared to the Dragon. Only that the Dragon 1982-1993 is the best of the best and the longest live, you will need to pay from 1500.00 to 2000.00 for a complete overhaul to make the machine better than new. Even my overhaul ZX-9 can't compare with my overhaul Dragon. Yes the Dragon has the auto reverse convinience but the NAAC is a killer. In the case of the CR-7 is a newer machine 1986-1993 where advancing an all auto machine seem sensible to the consumer, wireless remote and make no mistake the CR-7 does the calibration perfect. The CR-7 has the new Sankyo mechanism, awesome reliable very simple and cheapper. The newer CR-7A had direct drive. Compare with the traditional Nakamichi Mechanism on the Dragon. ZX-9, 680ZX, ZX-7 and others I don't think is as perfect but does the job well. The CR-5 is a decent machine but only has Bias and it doesn't have the test tone to calibrate, so to me an others Nakamichi should had incoporated the test control, but chose not to do it, so this makes the CR-5 not as good and desirable as CR-7A. The CR-7 sounds a bit better than a CR-5.
I hope this help.
PS I have a perfect working Nakamichi ZX-9 with super nice cusmetics with almost brought to specs at ES Labs that I am willing to part for 1500.00 or a bit less not to much.

It has manual but only bias, no rec level, and not seperate for each channel.
No Azimuth on either heads.

But for sure a nice deck still.
Just not anything I would purchase.
