As you may recall, I bought 6 5-packs of Avanti C-90 cassettes for 99 cents/5-pack, which were total crap. I'd seen them sold on Ebay, so I thought I'd sell the other 5 5-packs I hadn't opened. My intention was just to get rid of them & I put an opening bid of $3.29 with free shipping, which would just about cover the shipping via media mail in the USA.

I wasn't expecting to get more than $4 or so for them; I figured the boxes & inserts alone are worth about that. Well, this morning before I left for work, those Avanti's were up to $26.00! Am I missing something? Are these tapes really that valuable? There's a bidding war on these by some heavy-hitter tape buyers on Ebay. Those 6 5-packs w/shipping cost me less than $20. Who knew!

Dang. I have some old "who made these" tapes, hopefully they will do as well.

Maybe they think it's the old classic car?

Are you serious? You've got to be kidding me! Here at work, Ebay is a blocked site, so I haven't been able to track it. $52? American? Sweet fancy moses! If anyone's interested, that store I bought them from has them for only 99 cents/5-pack & the have over 3000 of them in stock.

Man, I just wanted to get enough to cover the shipping so I could get them out of here. Unreal.

You must be joking. I'll know for sure when I get home.

Very serious. And really... I couldn't believe what I saw myself. For $49 including shipping Total Media is selling 50 Fuji DR-II 90's (http://cgi.ebay.com/Fuji-DR-II-C-90-High-Bias-CrO2-Audio-Cassettes-50-lot_W0QQitemZ330268028676QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item3 30268028676&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A10|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14) on the bay. Crazy!!

Wow, I still can't believe it. Hopefully I won't get stiffed. Those Avanti's, worst cassette in the world, selling for over $2/each. Unreal. Maybe the buyer thinks they'll be like the Edsel, which are now collector's items. Yeah, they must have bought them solely for collection purposes, because there are much better tapes available for much less.

And to think, I priced them @ $3.29 just to get rid of them. Wow.

You won't get stiffed. The guy has 1026 transactions and 100% positive feedback rating. I checked out some of his buys and sells.... all cassettes. One feedback he got was like "this guy has all the hard to find tapes" included was a TDK D50. I just got back to cassettes this past Spring... I knew I'd find tapers but didn't realize how many collectors are out there.*eyepop*

Just guessing... he must not have ever come across these Avanti's. The prices of other auctions I looked at were typical bay pricing. Like you said collectors... he is thinking he just bought 25 cassettes for $2.08 each he can probably flip for $5 each labeling them "RARE".

I doubt the bidder will stiff you. He seems to buy everything in cassette lots on ebay. I would guess 90% of his feedbacks are from cassette buys. Maybe I'll have to pick some up online and resell them on ebay:-?

Thanks I googled them and found them earlier, but I didn't want to mention the place thinking that the bidder might be one of us. :p

Oh, I didn't think of that. However, I did post about those Avanti cassettes last month & also posted that link, so it's not like the info is new to TH.

Your auction pictures make them look much better than the website pictures. :D

Just a thought, but you could offer to let him off the hook. Tell him what he's actually bought, offer them for what you originally hoped to get in order to cover your costs. Then invite him to join Tapeheads! He might be a good guy to have around.

Not being a collector of rare tapes myself, I've never done business with bigjimslade, but he seems to be one of the top two or three resellers. I would imagine that he's a real asset to collectors. For the time it takes to make an ebay listing, complete the transaction, pack and ship one or two tapes at a time, it must work out to about minimum wage! No way would I spend my spare time like that *hypnot*

Best,
Mike
