Hi!
My Philips N4504 yearns for fresh tape and I´m able to buy 1000m pancakes SM911 for 28 euros each which is cheaper than get as much LPR35 tape.
The only thing which worries me is that the 911 would probably be an overkill to my RTR. Even RMGI LPR35 was a bit too much to the philips´es electronics (it seemed that the deck amp started to saturate before the tape and the recorder didn´t give enough bias current to tape), though older BASF LPR35/LP35 worked much better (sounded just perfect) :O
So is there any idea to use SM911 on Philips N4504 using 7,5 ips?
Best regards
Ville

I think LP 35 and LPR 35 isn't the same formule.

RMGI LPR-35 is the same formula as either 900 or 911. The difference is the LPR is 1.5 mil thick as opposed to 2 mil thick. I have some LPR-35 it nice tape.

Hi Villee,
I have both formulas of SM911 or BASF 911 and the older tape has a print level just 1 dB lower. The LPR35 is 1.0 mil and the SM911 and 900 is 1.5 mil tape. The machine should not have any problems with that tape either LPR35 or SM911 as I have set up older Teac decks with it and I did not have to change any parts bias wise. Perhaps like what is in the Teac decks record EQ wise you are having the same problem with your machine. If the Bias is too low then it will distort and saturate at a lower level than what it should be doing. Put a 1KHz and 10KHz sine wave in at 0 Vu and see how they record. Then you can determine if the machine is not adjusted correctly to those tapes.

RMGI LPR35 sounded a bit hissy (BASF LPR35 doesn´t) on my machine and gave about 2 db higher output than what the input was . If I put 0dB to the tape it will come +1, +2 dB from the tape.
Although the tape wasn´t distorted even at +3 dB levels . And I´m able to adjust the bias because I have the service manual and the recorder does have bias pots. So I´m going to order few rolls and try to adjust the recorder to work as well as possible at 7,5 ips (I use reel to reel to have higher quality recordings than type II/IV cassette tapes so 3 3/4 is not an option).*reelspin*
btw 7,5 ips is fine but I would like to have 1/2 track 15 ips reel to reel*reelspin*
Best regards
